Hi! I have 6 years experience as a fourth grade bilingual teacher at a public elementary school in Garland. Helping students come to that "lightbulb moment" excites me more than anything else in my professional life. I live and breath teaching, and understand that it is more than just covering the material. As a teacher I am also a coach, a mentor, a counselor, an encourager, a nurse, and an adventurer! I love leading students through the excitement of a good book, and helping them discover how to multiply. I get to understand the learning styles of each of my students, and figure out what motivates them. That's why tutoring through WyzAnt sounds like so much fun.
I have taught grades 4 and 5, in both general education and bilingual classrooms. Other than my regular teaching career, I have also taught summer school and an adult ESL class over the last five years. I speak Spanish and love teaching my students in both Spanish and English, although I am a native English speaker. I also have experience teaching third grade, and have taught students who have ability levels as low as kindergarten. In my classroom, I have been successful with all of my students (and had 100% pass rate on the TAKS tests last year), including those with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and those that are gifted and talented. Two years ago I was named Teacher of the Year for my school-Heather Glen Elementary School. I am the current director of the Drama Club at my school, as well at the liason with the Gifted and Talented program for Garland ISD, a mentor to new teachers, and one of two webmasters for our school.
I believe in a hands-on method of tutoring. The more manipulatives, counters, pictures, and stories the student can use, the easier he or she will understand the concepts. I can't wait to work with your child!
