I taught for twelve years in a variety of settings. During this time, I worked with students ranging from Kindergarten through 8th grade. While I have the most experience with the intermediate grades, I enjoy working with students of any age. I am comfortable teaching all subjects through 8th grade, but my training and certification for ESL and Reading extend through high school. Previous teaching positions that I held included middle school Reading and US History, 5th grade (self-contained and departmentalized), 2nd grade self-contained, 3rd grade self-contained, Literacy Support and ESL Support (K-5).
My private tutoring experience has been as varied as my teaching career. I tutored students ranging from Kindergarten through High School. With most elementary students, I provided specialized lessons on areas where I discovered they needed extra work. These were areas where the students might be a year or more behind expectations for their grade level. With most of my older students, I provided assistance with organization, test preparation, or other skills that helped them on to academic success. For the majority of these students, I did not provide content-specific knowledge. In some cases, I provided remedial Math, Literacy or ESL support in areas where students experienced significant difficulties.
My methods for working with students utilize sound educational practices. There is a great deal of discussion, we play games and we practice the necessary skills many ways. I take into account the age of the student, the needs of the student and the purpose of the tutoring lessons. This allows me to design a more effective, interactive and individualized lesson for each student with whom I work. I find that getting to know the student's, and parent's, goals before planning a lesson is the best way to make sure all needs are being met.
