I am an experienced Portrait Photographer expanding my expertise in Digital Imaging and Multimedia at Navarro College. Creativity has enhanced my work in a variety of non-artistic fields and I believe it is also important as a tutor. Adapting to the strengths of my students enables me to help students find their hidden keys to learning so they can succeed where they had struggled in the past.

I believe all students can learn. It is my job to find creative ways to help them hold on to new material. My experiences as a home-school mom, a well-traveled person, and a life-long learner will benefit my students.

Lucy’s subjects

Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator is a very useful program for vector drawing and design work. With tutoring, my students learn how to use the specialized tools in Illustrator and create artwork that reflects their style and imagination.

Adobe Photoshop

My experience with Adobe Photoshop goes back several years, since Adobe Photoshop 6.0. In Fall 2010, I updated my Photoshop skills by scoring an "A" at Navarro College in this subject. I am able to use Photoshop to edit photographs, draw & paint realistically, and create non-realistic artwork.

Art History

The immense variety of modern art today has roots in the masters of the past. Enjoy exploration of various artists and cultures, and increase recognition of the world's most famous works of art.

Drawing

As a current multimedia student at Navarro College, I am continually improving my drawing skills as I learn through the curriculum. I have studied art and design principles, and will encourage each student to notice the elements of their own artwork that enhance their visual impact. I enjoy helping new artists, and I have worked in a variety of media: charcoal, graphite, photography, digital 2D and 3D programs, watercolor and acrylic paints, and collage.

Elementary Math

Small issues with math can become bigger issues later. Tutoring in math can prevent years of frustration. I do not believe in busy work. I look over every practice problem and evaluate why it was missed, to help the student be confident with the same problems that used to be confusing.

Years of experience with homeschooling my own children, substitute teaching, and tutoring college students, has helped me develop ways to explain solutions simply, and make progress quickly.

Elementary Science

Science is about curiosity and discovery, but getting stuck in a rut can spoil the fun.

Every student has a unique way of exploring the world, and individual tutoring can help take the mystery and confusion out of science. I can help you find patterns, simplify math and charts in homework, and teach memory tricks for weird words. Explore the basics behind nature and technology.

General Computer

At college I work as a student peer tutor and a computer lab assistant. It is amazing how quickly people learn to love their computer work after tutoring. As a tutor, I can help them find out why the computer is not cooperating with them, and teach my students how to be more successful, get work done more quickly, and avoid computer frustration.

Microsoft PowerPoint

This versatile tool can help anyone present material in a interesting way. Learn the basics and explore the advanced features Powerpoint. Whether you are a student, or need to make presentations for work, I can help you learn to put together effective PowerPoint presentations quickly.

Painting

As a current multimedia student at Navarro College, I am continually improving my drawing skills as I learn through the curriculum. Recently, I was invited to join other portrait artists to paint in a Quick Draw Event at the Pearce Museum. I was coached during the event by professional artists, Don Weller and Don Dernovich, and created a watercolor representation of the live model in only 45 minutes. I enjoy helping new artists, and I have worked in a variety of media: charcoal, graphite, photography, digital 2D and 3D programs, watercolor and acrylic paints, and collage.

Phonics

Phonics can be confusing to some students because of their learning style, or missing steps in their basic instruction. Frustration can take all of the fun out of storybooks and homework. Individual tutoring is the best way to gain confidence, and learn to enjoy reading.

Years of experience with homeschooling my own children, substitute teaching, and tutoring college students, has helped me develop ways to explain solutions simply, and make progress more quickly.

Prealgebra

Small issues with math can become bigger issues later. Tutoring in math can prevent years of frustration. In pre-algebra problems are more complicated and need to be broken back down to the basic steps taught earlier in school. I do not believe in busy work. I look over every practice problem and evaluate why it was missed, focusing on how to get it right. I help the student gain confidence with the same problems that used to be confusing by teaching these missing steps.

Years of experience with homeschooling my own children, substitute teaching, and tutoring college students, has helped me develop ways to explain solutions simply, and make progress quickly.

Reading

Learning reading skills turns a chore into a pleasure.

Lessons start with listening to read-alouds to sample different types of storytelling. My students learn to experience new worlds and characters as their skills improve.

Study Skills

Study skills can help you succeed, even in the subjects you do not like.

I help all my students to use strengths in one area to succeed in others, and I also tutor them to find new skills that work better for their learning style. I will help you to learn better organization, note writing, listening, memory, and test taking skills.
