I worked with Bruce for my Gen Chem II. I must say he is very very strong with the subject matter. He is thorough and is extremely professional. Every Chapter in Gen Chem II demands strong grasp of the concepts that will be put to full use in solving problems. Bruce's strong Math background also comes in very handy when solving problems. All his years of teaching college level really shines through during the tutoring sessions. He will give you additional information about the subject matter sometimes that will be both interesting and will come in extremely handy during exam prep. I completely recommend Bruce for College Chemistry.
I will however add, that to get the full benefit of his tutoring sessions, the student MUST do his/her homework prior to each session. It is best to go in knowing exactly where your problem areas are so Bruce can work with you on that. In other words, you can tap into Bruce's expertise in Chemistry better by letting him know where exactly you need help rather than going through the whole chapter with him and letting him figure it out for you.
Bruce replied on 7/15/2013:
Thank you very much, R., for your exceptionally well-thought-out feedback. You have captured the very essence of my tutoring style and the types of relationships with clients that are most likely to lead to their long-term successes.
I'm glad that you had a superb experience in Gen. Chem. II through my guidance. I certainly look forward to continuing our working relationship with Organic Chemistry as you strive toward achieving your career aspirations.
"Great Chemistry Tutor"
Katie from Richardson, TX on 6/20/14
Dr. Bruce tutored my daughter in high school Honors Chemistry for the entire second semester (Jan-May 2014) portion of a full year course. She had been having significant struggles in the course for a variety of reasons. However, she is an A student and has not had the need for a tutor in any subjects before. Our decision to hire Dr. Bruce allowed her to turn the corner and ultimately make an A in the course. This was a major feat given how lost she was in the subject matter when they started.
Dr. Bruce is extremely well versed in, and clearly has a passion for, the subject of Chemistry, but I’m sure that likely can be said about many tutors. I believe the difference maker is that Dr. Bruce has many qualities that allow the student-tutor relationship to work. Most importantly, Dr. Bruce lets the student drive the content to be discussed, in whatever level of detail is needed, and however much repetition is needed for the concepts to sink in. For example, one session might focus on a lab or homework assignment, while another may focus on an upcoming test.
Dr. Bruce comes to each session well prepared. He brings and references many teaching aids throughout the session, helping to reinforce concepts. Obviously, it helps for the student to be prepared prior to each session beginning, and I did make sure my daughter studied and prepared her questions before each session to get the most out of it.
Other qualities worthy of note are Dr. Bruce’s flexibility such as extending a session longer than the scheduled time, scheduling additional sessions during finals, rescheduling (as student’s demands are constantly changing), etc. Additionally, he is very patient with the student when repetition is required. And, I believe he is able to break complex topics down to their fundamentals, individualized to the student’s needs. And, to repeat myself, the additional teaching aids he provides are invaluable.
All in all, Dr. Bruce was a great help to my daughter. I believe he is quite concerned about the student’s overall success and sincerely wants to do what he can to help them succeed. If my daughter continues with higher-level Chemistry course work, and she needs assistance to ace the subject matter, I wouldn't hesitate to use Dr. Bruce again.
Bruce replied on 6/22/2014:
Thank you ever so much for your exceptionally objective and thorough feedback. You've captured the very essence of my tutoring approach and personality. I enjoyed each and every session that we shared and truly wish you the best of success in your future academic endeavors as you strive toward achieving your career objectives.

Mr. H tutored me for a year in chemistry and algebra. He is an excellent teacher who taught me material through several methods such as: working through the problem, presenting different problems about the same topic, and going into depth as to why certain answers are wrong and why one is right. He thoroughly explained the topic in a way that was easy to understand while making it so that I would learn as much he could teach me. I would definitely use Mr. H’s tutoring services.
"Bruce H. Is A Rare Find"
Tatiana from Flower Mound, TX on 5/25/14
Bruce H. is a rare find. He is very knowledgeable in such a difficult subject as organic chemistry, but even more importantly, he fosters great enthusiasm for the subject. He always brings and shows articles about chemistry and its many applications. He explains clearly and in detail all concepts and logic. In particular, many concepts from general chemistry are critical to understanding organic chemistry, and Bruce knows which ideas are important and has a talent for teaching them and how they apply.
Further, Bruce is very flexible and tries to accommodate your needs. When we needed extra time, he was always willing, even if it meant coming at very early or late hours, even on weekends. He is always very punctual, and you can always rely on him coming on time.
He helped my son improve his grades and maintain the higher grades throughout the year they worked together. My son finished Organic chemistry 1 and 2 at UTD with excellent grades.
I highly recommend Bruce H. for anybody who needs tutoring in any chemistry subject.
Bruce replied on 5/27/2014:
Tatiana, thank you very much for your kind and objective feedback. It was a true pleasure to have successfully mentored your son through his entire year of Organic Chemistry. Marcia from Carrollton, TX on 7/14/13
Bruce tutored my daughter in AP Chemistry for most of the past school year. He was always punctual and prepared for each lesson. I also need to mention that he is "Mr. High Energy." My daughter is also very focused and desires to learn. With both of them working together, she was able to get a 780 on her Chemistry SAT Subject Test and a 5 on her AP Chemistry Exam.
I would recommend Bruce for his dedication and his commitment to his students' success.
Bruce replied on 7/19/2013:
Thank you very much, Marcia, for your kind feedback.
It was, indeed, a pleasure to have guided your daughter to highly-successful outcomes on both the SAT Chemistry Subject Test and the AP Chemistry Exam. These have been among my major objectives in desiring to work with AP Chemistry students.
You hit the nail right on the head, Marcia, in terms of the value of teamwork in achieving student success.
Best wishes to both you and your daughter.
"My son successfully passed!"
Deborah from Richardson, TX on 6/12/13
My son enjoys a challenge, but his first grades in PreAP Algebra 2 and Chemistry put him at risk of failing both courses. I selected Dr. Bruce to tutor my son because as a high school algebra and chemistry substitute teacher, Dr. Bruce has full access to current curriculum materials and schedules. When Dr. Bruce began tutoring my son, he first assessed my son’s knowledge of both courses. Dr. Bruce then reviewed critical concepts my son had missed in class. They worked together to ensure my son’s understanding of these foundation concepts before moving on.
As Dr. Bruce makes clear in just one of his tutoring sessions, he likes to first take a small piece of the troubled section in algebra or chemistry and then breaks down that section, stressing the importance of each part; which my son found to be very effective to his understanding of the material.
My son asked questions of Dr. Bruce which he did not feel comfortable discussing in class. He was able to take his time and work through problems, complete homework, and prepare for test during tutoring. Dr. Bruce was always aware of testing schedules and upcoming curriculum topics. This was very helpful to me, because my son was so focused on trying to keep up; he often missed important pieces of information.
Dr. Bruce takes his job as a tutor very seriously. He was always on time, always prepared, finished on time, was flexible when needed, and was straight forward about my son’s progress.
When it comes to learning there is no magic, just hard work and effort. With Dr. Bruce’s help, my son can now move on to subjects which accentuate his talents with the proven knowledge that when challenged with subjects difficult for him, he can be successful.
Bruce replied on 6/13/2013:
Deborah, thanks so much for your well-thought out response. I thoroughly enjoyed working with your son at each session, be it for just Algebra 2, Chemistry, or a little of both.
The fact that he was receptive and prepared at each meeting and with a clear sense of what he wanted to accomplish went a long way toward his achieving his ultimate success. I was, as always, delighted to have played a major role in helping him attain his goals. Best wishes!
Nailya from Dallas, TX on 5/10/13
Dr. Bruce tutored my daughter for eight months in AP Chemistry. It is a very challenging course. I was lucky to find Dr. Bruce. If you need an AP Chemistry tutor he is the one. He is able to explain to her in a way that she is able to understand and has provided excellent visuals as well. He is very knowledgeable and works to find out what concepts my daughter doesn't understand. My daughter has made amazing progress in chemistry in just a couple of months. Thank you Dr. Bruce.
Bruce replied on 5/13/2013:
It was, indeed, a pleasure to have assisted your daughter on a regular basis with her AP Chemistry class. I love challenges, and the AP Chemistry course provided plenty of them on an ongoing basis.
Your daughter was always prepared at sessions and with a clear sense of what she wanted to accomplish. I extend my best wishes to her for future academic success as she strives toward fulfilling her professional goals.
"Great Chemistry tutor"
Nikhil from Allen, TX on 5/5/13
Bruce taught Chemistry to my son who's in Junior High this year. My son found a new interest in Chemistry after he started having regular weekly classes with Bruce since the past 6 months, and improved his class grades as well. He's appearing in the AP Chemistry exams next week and targeting a "5".
I'd recommend Bruce for High School Chemistry tutoring and wish him all the best in life.
Bruce replied on 7/18/2013:
Thank you very much for your kind feedback concerning the impact that my multi-month tutoring sessions had on Nikhil's achievement. It was, indeed, a pleasure to have worked with him on a twice per week basis and to have consistently observed how focused and prepared he was at each session with the most challenging questions from his AP Chemistry course. Congratulations to him on his having achieved a 780 on the SAT Chemistry Subject Test and a 5 on the AP Chemistry Exam.
"Knowledgeable but Impatient"
Krissy from Sachse, TX on 3/23/13
He knew his stuff and his intellectualism is obvious. But I found him impatient and he made me feel belittled when I did not understand something. At times he seemed quite boastful. One time I came to meet him and he told me about how he got a job offer prior to meeting me but had to cancel to meet with me. He made it clear he would have rather not met me, although it's not like he's meeting me for free. He has also bragged about how he is one of the highest in demand tutors from this site. My experience was not great with him. Although he helped me get my work done, at times I would leave in tears because he made me feel so intimidated and dumb. He has had great reviews, maybe because he is used to working with students that already know their stuff. I have been struggling and I am not up to par or pace with other students. That is why I sought out a tutor in the first place, because my needs weren't just that I needed help with my work. I needed help understanding the material. He could have adapted to my needs or tried to understand that maybe I was a different student on a level he was not used to. Everyone works differently and he just wasn't the right fit for me. If you already understand material from class and just need help with problems then he's good for that, but if you, like me, kind of need someone to reteach you things, then he is definitely not someone I would recommend.
Bruce replied on 3/30/2013:
Thank you very much for having provided feedback concerning your recent tutoring experience with me for General Chemistry 2.
Several issues that were raised in your correspondence require further clarification in order to put the whole experience in its proper context.
First, you informed me from the beginning that you were weak in General Chemistry 1 and received a subpar grade in this course. The topics in General Chemistry 2 were becoming increasingly more complex and would continue in that fashion as the course unfolded. Problems required a higher level of critical-thinking skills and also incorporation of a number of key concepts from General Chemistry 1. In addition, mathematical skills such as handling logarithms, solving quadratic and simple Algebra 1 equations, and setting up and solving proportions all required mastery in order to successfully handle current problems.
Second, as our sessions progressed, my assessment was that there were just too many past weak links that required remediation in the limited amount of session time I could devote to have eventually brought you up to speed for success. Not having read a chapter (or at least its summary) due to lack of time and prior to a session only compounded matters.
Since many students, particularly those planning to enter the medical field, require an additional year of Organic Chemistry, it becomes even more vital for success to have acquired a strong mastery of both General Chemistry 1 and General Chemistry 2 core topics.
Yes, I admit that sometimes I appear tough, but this comes from many years experience of knowing the necessary skills for success and having had an intense personal interest in both the short- and long-term welfare of all of my students. I was just attempting to be honest and open.
Accordingly, based upon the aforementioned, I was not your best fit for your overall situation.
"Did what we needed him to do."
Dan from Allen, TX on 11/12/12
Bruce was prompt, efficient, and thoroughly knowledgeable. He brought our daughter up to speed on her Algebra and Geometry for an SAT retest and she did better the second time around.
Bruce replied on 11/13/2012:
Dan, thanks very much for your feedback. I'm delighted that your daughter noticeably improved on her SAT retake. Best wishes.
Kavitha from Frisco, TX on 10/8/12
My daughter's experience with Bruce was highly rewarding. He is very knowledgeable and informative. According to my daughter, he used lot of easy methods to teach Chemistry and made it seem more fun.
"Very patient and efficient! "
Monica from Plano, TX on 9/28/12
I highly recommend Bruce for math and chemistry tutoring! He is extremely accommodating, patient and knowledgeable. I needed a dual math and chemistry tutor for the PCAT examination. This exam is the pharmacy school entrance exam and the testing material had basic to organic chemistry, algebra 1, 2, pre-calculus and calculus 1. Bruce taught me the "unit factor method" along with test taking strategies. Since the calculator is not allowed, he helped me figure out problems the most efficient way to save time and whenever I felt a problem was too tough to solve, Bruce would guide me through it rather than tell me the answer. He is a professional and if anyone wants to master math or chemistry, he is the tutor to select.
"Very responsible tutor available according to student's schedule!"
Troy from Dallas, TX on 8/7/12
I was very happy with my tutoring experience with Bruce. He guided me through the second semester of organic chemistry in a fast-pace summer school session!! After having struggled through the first summer semester of o-chem on my own, I decided to seek help for the second semester. Bruce knows his stuff in chemistry! He was patient, took the time to teach me, and followed my lead as to what I thought I needed to study. I would definitely use him again for future science classes and highly recommend him to other students. Don't struggle through alone -- call Bruce and enjoy his guidance and calm teaching style.
"Thorough and Patient Tutor"
Susan from Richardson, TX on 6/6/12
Bruce worked with my son on Pre-AP Algebra II for the past seven months. During that time, he spent many hours going over specific problems and the steps needed to solve them. Showing my son how to break down the steps of each problem was very beneficial to him. Bruce was patient and thorough in his explanations and because of that, my son's problem solving strategies greatly improved, and he was able to finish the school year on a positive note. Bruce was also always professional in his approach, well-prepared, and was always on time for his twice-a-week sessions with us. Both my son and I would highly recommend him to anyone!
Bruce replied on 6/17/2013:
After the positive experience in having worked with your son in Pre-AP Algebra 2, I wish to thank you so much for, once again, having selected me to guide him to success in Precalculus over the majority of this recently-concluded schoolyear. It was very satisfying to know that my style of breaking down complex concepts in both Algebra 2 and Precalculus into simpler parts will serve him well when he proceeds into Calculus.
Lauren from Dallas, TX on 5/29/12
Bruce tutored my child throughout the year in Pre-AP Chemistry. He was always prepared, patient and flexible. The sessions increased my child's confidence in Chemistry, and he ended the year with a great grade. Bruce is dedicated to helping students and was a pleasure to work with.
"Goes step by step!"
E from Plano, TX on 5/17/12
I took Gen Chem II at a university and was struggling a lot during the first half of the semester but after having weekly sessions with Bruce, he showed me how to go step by step for every problem and showed me how to solve multi-step problems easily. If you are struggling with Gen Chem I or Gen Chem II at a university I would definitely recommend Bruce as he is very knowledgeable in the subject area and can help you with problems easily!
Merlin from Allen, TX on 2/13/12
Bruce H. was always early to our sessions and was very professional. Easy to work with and very helpful. He has had a positive impact on my grades and has helped me to improve quickly in Chemistry Pre-AP.
"Very patient and knowledgeable"
Raya from Allen, TX on 1/16/12
Mr. H helped my niece with her Algebra II class which she was struggling with. I found him to be courteous and always on time. I also observed that he takes his time to explain the solution to the student not just provide answers and tries to teach the correct techniques for solving these problems which is what we needed.
My niece was amazed how patient Mr. H was with her and thanks him for all his help. I would recommend this tutor to anyone who is struggling with math.
"Very good teacher and tutor"
Brandon from Denton, TX on 9/10/11
Bruce is a great tutor, he took me from a C to an A. He is very flexible, he was willing to arrange his schedule for my success. He never missed an appointment. He really knows his stuff and I am lucky to have found him as a tutor. PS. He loves Dirk Nowinski and the Mavs!
"A very patient and knowledgeable tutor"
Seth from Lavon, TX on 8/10/11
I took a Gen Chem 2 class during a summer semester and Bruce taught me the subject matter better than my college professor and was far more patient. I learned more from him in the 2-3 hour sessions we would have than an entire week's worth of information from my very ineffective professor. Thanks alot Bruce.
