For students in DALLAS/RICHARDSON/PLANO/ALLEN/FRISCO, I boost achievement in HS GEOMETRY-ALGEBRA-PRECAL/CHEM and COLLEGE TRIG-ALGEBRA/GENERAL-ORGANIC-BIOCHEM.

It's been rewarding having made major short-/long-term positive impacts on critical-thinking abilities of a diverse group of students during my 4 years with WyzAnt!

PLEASE REVIEW MY SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS AND RESOURCES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT MY SPECIFIC MATH AND CHEMISTRY CAPABILITIES AND WITTY NATURE.

I am a consistent, methodical and globally-minded individual, a HIGH SCHOOL CLASS VALEDICTORIAN as a MATH-SCIENCE MAJOR, and one of WYZANT'S CONTINUALLY TOP-ACHIEVING, MODERATELY-PRICED HS/COLLEGE DUAL MATH-CHEMISTRY TUTORS IN DALLAS-FORT WORTH. My sessions begin by considering both the student's subject knowledge base and special learning requirements. Therefore, the student will normally drive the initial pace of instruction. My methods will then involve the repetitive assembly of accurate and correctly-ordered Mathematical (ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, TRIGONOMETRY, PRECALCULUS, COLLEGE ALGEBRA) and Chemical information. Each step will be thoroughly explained, while encouraging individual questions, in multiple, easy-to-understand ways before proceeding with either the student's resources or mine. NATURALLY, NUMEROUS EXAMPLES TO ILLUSTRATE THE VARIOUS MATH AND CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS WILL BE PROVIDED BOTH DURING THE SESSION AND FOR OUTSIDE STUDY. As a result, what can be expected to be heard from both my auditory and visual learners is "THAT MAKES SENSE", since now they will begin to see how all important concepts are linked together. THUS, IN A NUTSHELL, TO DERIVE THE MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM PARTNERING WITH ME, START A LONG-TERM ASSOCIATION BY BEGINNING IN HIGH SCHOOL (OR EARLIER) WITH EITHER GEOMETRY OR ALGEBRA OPTIONALLY PAIRED WITH REGULAR, PAP, AP, OR IB CHEMISTRY, FOLLOWED BY PRECALCULUS, AND THEN CONTINUING WITH COLLEGE-LEVEL ALGEBRA, TRIGONOMETRY, GENERAL CHEMISTRY, AND EVEN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY.

Aside from having had a diverse INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY career, I have also acquired valuable tutoring experience through personal efforts, TUTORING 101 and CLUB Z and academic experience through GENERAL and ORGANIC CHEMISTRY instruction at FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY in Tallahassee. In addition, service has been provided as a DALLAS COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR in ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES-NURSING (CHEMISTRY 1405 and 1406, which have a GENERAL-ORGANIC-BIOCHEMISTRY emphasis) and GENERAL CHEMISTRY 1 and 2 (1411 and 1412, respectively). This tenure has even included active tutoring in CHEMISTRY under a STEM-administered grant. Additional educational activities have continued to involve many GEOMETRY, ALGEBRA 1, ALGEBRA 2, PRECALCULUS and CHEMISTRY classrooms within the RICHARDSON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT. THESE LATTER EXPERIENCES HAVE FURNISHED ADDITIONAL RELEVANT RESOURCES THAT HAVE BEEN SHARED WITH CLIENTS AND PROVEN INVALUABLE DURING TUTORING SESSIONS.

In summary, students from the many public and private secondary schools and also the community colleges and universities within or outside of the Dallas Metro Area will benefit academically, become more effective immediate and long-term critical thinkers, and realize their professional goals through their association with me. What more can you ask for?

"Knowledgeable but Impatient"

- Krissy, Sachse, TX on 3/23/13
Bruce replied on 3/30/2013

Krissy,

Thank you very much for having provided feedback concerning your recent tutoring experience with me for General Chemistry 2.

Several issues that were raised in your correspondence require further clarification in order to put the whole experience in its proper context.

First, you informed me from the beginning that you were weak in General Chemistry 1 and received a subpar grade in this course. The topics in General Chemistry 2 were becoming increasingly more complex and would continue in that fashion as the course unfolded. Problems required a higher level of critical-thinking skills and also incorporation of a number of key concepts from General Chemistry 1. In addition, mathematical skills such as handling logarithms, solving quadratic and simple Algebra 1 equations, and setting up and solving proportions all required mastery in order to successfully handle current problems.

Second, as our sessions progressed, my assessment was that there were just too many past weak links that required remediation in the limited amount of session time I could devote to have eventually brought you up to speed for success. Not having read a chapter (or at least its summary) due to lack of time and prior to a session only compounded matters.

Since many students, particularly those planning to enter the medical field, require an additional year of Organic Chemistry, it becomes even more vital for success to have acquired a strong mastery of both General Chemistry 1 and General Chemistry 2 core topics.

Yes, I admit that sometimes I appear tough, but this comes from many years experience of knowing the necessary skills for success and having had an intense personal interest in both the short- and long-term welfare of all of my students. I was just attempting to be honest and open.

Accordingly, based upon the aforementioned, I was not your best fit for your overall situation.

Best wishes,

Bruce H.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have ACT math resources which can be used to diagnose students' particular strengths and weaknesses from the onset. Skill building strategies can then be modeled and implemented to bring students to higher levels of achievement.

Algebra 1

Easily dealt with are the following topics routinely covered in middle or high school Algebra I: handling equations(particularly in word problems), solving inequalities, explaining a variety of functions(including graphical interpretation), solving systems of linear equations and linear inequalities, handling exponents and polynomials, factoring polynomials, handling exponential and radical functions, and dealing with rational functions and equations.

As an additional resource I also possess an Algebra I "Teacher's Edition" text.

Algebra 2

I can handle most topics in Algebra II and College Algebra and am especially strong in word problems, exponents, solving both logarithmic and radical equations, factoring polynomials, simplifying expressions involving both radicals and complex numbers, and describing the behavior (domain, range, presence of asymptotes) of a variety of functions, including inequality(to include absolute value), rational, inverse, and transformed. Conic sections is also a familiar area of expertise.

As an additional resource I also possess an Algebra II "Teacher's Edition" text.

Word problems are a particular challenge for a number of students for whom the following steps must first be modeled: 1) drawing an appropriate diagram, if required, 2) establishing the correct algebraic representation(s) for the unknown(s) and then using this information to label the correct part(s) of the diagram, as needed, 3) linking together the algebraic representations by the correct math operations required by the problem, 4) carrying out the algebraic manipulations to solve for the unknown(s), and 5) checking the solution(s) for both accuracy and mathematical validity.

ASVAB

I will assist clients with the verbal, mathematics and science sections of the ASVAB test.

Particular strengths are in unfamiliar word meanings deduced from context clues and in mathematics problems requiring both reading comprehension and correct algebraic representations and setups.

Biochemistry

My vast knowledge of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and 21st century Human Nutrition enables me to understand and explain many Biochemistry concepts.

I have also taught multiple times a college-level General/Organic/Biochemistry hybrid course.

Chemistry

I am exceptionally knowledgeable in every important topic that is a part of each level (regular, honors, pre-AP, AP, and IB) of high school chemistry and that is also a component of college allied health sciences-nursing (1405, 1406, and 1407) and GENERAL I (1411) and II (1412) chemistry. This expertise also includes thorough handling of the procedures and calculations involved in laboratory experiments for both AP and college-level chemistry. More and more, students, especially college-level and high school AP level, are requiring assistance with both lab and lecture information during a lesson, particularly during a fast-paced summer session.

I also have keen insight into successfully handling online MASTERING CHEMISTRY assignments for INTRO and also GENERAL I and II.

In addition, I have successfully worked with students in preparation for the SAT Chemistry subject test, the AP Chemistry exam, and the Chemistry sections of the PCAT. I am also very familiar with both the Zumdahl and Brown, LeMay and Bursten textbooks that are used in many school districts' AP Chemistry courses.

Even more, I have the talent to completely and simplistically explain any topic so that the student will easily grasp it and then use it to successfully learn a new bit of related information. A good case in point is a demonstration of a blueprint model of the unit factor method for solving many types of quantitative conversion calculations, especially those dealing with reaction stoichiometry, encountered in chemistry.

Elementary Math

Students at the elementary level, particularly in grades 5 and 6, have been successfully tutored in math.

With patience I break down problems(particularly word applications)into parts that are simple for students to understand.

My approaches are also adaptable to different learning styles.

Geometry

I easily handle any topic (including applications problems) covered in a regular, PAP, or honors geometry course and am excellent in both inductive and deductive reasoning, the various methods for proving polygons both congruent and similar, and the interplay between algebra and geometry in word problem situations.

GRE

I have very keen insight into general mathematical, algebraic, and geometric concepts such that effective problem-solving strategies of the types emphasized on the GRE can be modeled for the student.

Nutrition

I am exceptionally knowledgeable in the principles of 21st century nutrition and have even created an international food pyramid (which I have followed daily for years) after having conducted very broad-based research on the healthiest worldwide eating patterns. My fact sheets, "The Maximum Mental Health Diet", are based upon the core principles embodied in this pyramid and are offered to any client upon request at the first or subsequent tutoring session.

I also offer dietary nutritional counseling considering individualized macronutrient/micronutrient-balanced eating strategies for steady weight loss, improved brainpower/mood, blood sugar/pressure regulation, improved bone/eye health, improved cardiovascular health, and cancer/Alzheimer's risk reduction.

Organic Chemistry

To all Organic students who are either PRE-MED or related health professions bound: Please don't allow your potential fear of Organic Chemistry to sweep away your aspirations for achieving your career goals. I am here to solidly support you every step of the way.

I have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and have gained much experience utilizing Organic Chemistry in the private sector, teaching Organic Chemistry concepts within both 2-year and 4-year colleges, as well as having tutored private clients in both first semester and second semester Organic Chemistry.

Nomenclature by IUPAC rules, interpretation of spectral data (NMR, IR, mass spectrometry), all types of isomerism, chirality, functional group chemistry, reaction mechanisms, cycloaddition reactions, organometallic chemistry, carbanion reactions, and substitution/elimination reactions are particular areas of expertise.

My strong background in General Chemistry I and II enables me to much more effectively explain many features occurring in the two semester sequence of Organic Chemistry. For this very reason a number of students partner with me during the Summer to get a heads-up for Fall Organic I or II. During this time, their strengths and weaknesses in a variety of core General Chemistry topic areas are assessed and remediated, if needed. This process significantly cuts down on the amount of memorization required for success in O-Chem. PLEASE AVAIL YOURSELVES OF THIS OPPORTUNITY SO THAT COURSES DO NOT HAVE TO UNNECESSARILY END UP BEING REPEATED AT A LATER TIME.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is that critical point between the student's prior math experiences and the more challenging upcoming courses in algebra and geometry. With my skill set in the basic handling of numbers and the symbolic representation of numbers and ideas, I will build up the confidence level of the student through patience and encouragement. This will establish a strong foundation for future studies.

Performance exceeding 90% was achieved on the Texas State Educator's Gr. 4-8 Math Exam.

Precalculus

I am proficient with general functions and graphs, polynomial, rational, radical, absolute value, exponential and logarithmic functions and their various transformations, fundamental trigonometric concepts, including the Laws of Sines and Cosines in applications problems, the cosine and sine of angle sum and difference formulas, handling trigonometric identities and polar coordinates, solving systems of equations in 2 or 3 variables, parametric equations, vectors and their applications, and graphing conic sections.

SAT Math

I have multiple SAT resources which can be used from the onset to diagnose students' particular strengths and weaknesses in geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Skill building strategies can then be modeled and implemented to bring students to higher levels of achievement on simulated tests.

Trigonometry

I can handle most topics in trigonometry and am especially strong in application-type problems, converting between degrees and radian measure and polar and rectangular coordinates, solving trigonometric equations, simplifying trigonometric expressions and identities, graphing trigonometric functions and their transformations, and applying the Laws of Sines and Cosines to practical problems.

Bruce H.

Susan,

After the positive experience in having worked with your son in Pre-AP Algebra 2, I wish to thank you so much for, once again, having selected me to guide him to success in Precalculus over the majority of this recently-concluded schoolyear. It was very satisfying to know that my style of breaking down complex concepts in both Algebra 2 and Precalculus into simpler parts will serve him well when he proceeds into Calculus.

Best wishes!
Bruce

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Many students are fortunate to have tentatively chosen a career path for themselves by the time they have begun high school.  If this path has included a STEM or health-related (i.e., pre-med, pharmacy, dentistry, physician's assistant) discipline, most have been guided along the math track sequence of Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus and sometimes even Calculus.  These... read more

Several of my current Geometry students have commented on this very distinction.  This has prompted me to offer a few possible reasons.   First, Geometry requires a heavy reliance on explanations and justifications (particularly of the formal two-column proof variety) that involve stepwise, deductive reasoning.  For many, this is their first exposure to this type of... read more
