Greeting! My name is Katie. I was born and raised in Port Neches, and graduated from PN-G in 2006. I attended Lamar University, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Biology in December 2010. Last fall, I enrolled in the teacher certification program at Lamar, and have just finished up my classes. Last fall (2013) I student taught a 6th grade science class at Port Neches Middle School. For the past year, I have substitute taught at all grade levels. I have recently taken, and passed, my PPR test (for teacher certification), and have taken and passed the Lamar 4-8 Science, and 8-12 Biology tests. I am officially certified to teach 4-8 science.
I am looking to tutor during evenings, and on weekends. I am highly qualified to teach middle school science (which includes grades 4-8, physical science, chemistry, biology, and earth and space science) as well as high school biology.
A few things that might help you decide if I'm a good fit for you and your student:
I am a geek. I spend a lot of time reading, I play video games, and I love science fiction. I'm also very DIY and arts-and-crafts inclined. I'm a very relaxed, open-minded girl. I like to use a lot of graphic organizers, foldables, and hands-on experiments. I also like to incorporate my creative/artsy side into my teaching. I prefer to use authentic assessment. An example would be for students to create lyrics to a popular song using key vocabulary. Another would be for students to create a brochure for the topic (i.e. create a travel brochure to the respiratory system). These types of activities motivate students and allow them to work with the information instead of simply trying to memorize.
I look forward to working with you!
