All of Karin’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Karin’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

Adobe Illustrator

I'm a professional Graphic Designer and work extensively with Illustrator and Photoshop daily. In my free time, I do freelance illustration. I especially enjoy projects that allow me to learn new ways to push Illustrator to its limits. I would be happy to share my portfolio, or samples of my work.

Adobe Photoshop

I am a professional graphic designer and use Photoshop on a daily basis. I'm comfortable with all versions from CS4 to CC. If you want to learn the basics to correct and improve your photos, take a few years off someone's portrait or remove your daughter's annoying Ex, combine bracketed exposures for stunning HDR images, or create original Photoshop art, I can teach you how to do it. I love working with Adobe Creative Suite, and the joy I take in using these programs comes through in my teaching.

Anthropology

I hold a BA and an MA in Anthropology. The BA is from Bryn Mawr College, the MA is from the University of Michigan. In addition, I completed all PhD coursework for a doctorate in Anthropology, but did not complete the dissertation.

Archaeology

I hold a BA in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College, where I specialized in Archaeology (a sub-discipline within the Anthropology department). I continued my studies at the University of Michigan, receiving my MA in Anthropology/Archaeology, and continuing with PhD studies.

Desktop Publishing

I worked as a technical writer for 5+ years, producing product manuals and training manuals. I've worked in marketing and publicity for theater groups, producing brochures, advertising, and playbills. I'm competent in InDesign, including interactive features, Publisher, MS Word, and Apple Pages.

Drawing

I am an accomplished traditional artist, trained in classical European methods. I have been drawing and painting virtually all my life, and have studied methods of teaching art to children. I have a firm grasp of perspective, tone, shading, and color theory. I work with graphite, charcoal, pastels, and colored pencil, and believe that teaching art, at its core, is teaching the student to draw what they see, rather than what they think they see. Anyone can learn to draw--they just need to release preconceptions, and start afresh.

Dreamweaver

I am a professional web designer. I have a certificate in web design from Collin College, where my coursework included basic and advanced Dreamweaver courses. I am skilled in HTML and CSS and familiar with Dreamweaver's sometimes complex and powerful tools.

English

I am a word nerd: the kind of person who gets excited about Latin and Greek roots, understands (and uses) the subjunctive, and can't encounter a word I don't know without running to the dictionary--well, these days it's more likely to be Wiktionary. But those are the mechanics of reading and writing. I also believe that everyone, child or adult, can find joy in reading and creative expression in writing. You don't have to be a word nerd to appreciate the new worlds that reading opens or the success in any area that clear and graceful writing can bring.

Grammar

I am a word nerd: the kind of person who gets excited about Latin and Greek roots, understands (and uses) the subjunctive, and can't encounter a word I don't know without running to the dictionary--well, these days it's more likely to be Wiktionary. English grammar is a beautiful system of interrelated rules. Once you understand the system, you can use it to bring a natural grace and professionalism to your speech and writing.

But words and grammar are the mechanics of reading and writing. I also believe that everyone, child or adult, can find joy in reading and creative expression in writing. Once you remove the stress associated with struggles with grammar, a student can relax and and enjoy the success in any field that clear and graceful writing can bring.

Painting

I am an accomplished traditional artist, trained in classical European methods. I have been drawing and painting virtually all my life, and have studied methods of teaching art to children. I have a firm grasp of perspective, tone, shading, and color theory. I paint with oil and acrylics, but primarily use acrylics in teaching, because of the flexibility the quick dry time offers. I believe that teaching painting, at its core, is teaching the student to paint what they see, rather than what they think they see. Anyone can learn to paint--they just need to release preconceptions, and start afresh.

Web Design

I am a professional web designer with a certificate in web design from Collin College and am skilled in HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, whether direct coding or using a CMS such as WordPress, or web development tools such as Dreamweaver.

Writing

I am a self-described word nerd, who delights in a well-turned phrase or strongly composed paragraph. I am an old school grammarian with 10+ years of professional writing in technical, marketing, and academic publications.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
