With over 5 years of experience as a tutor, I have a unique style of tutoring. I have the love for learning and so I always want to pass it on to someone, especially one who doesn't. These are my approaches:
Assessment:
This helps me understand the child's areas of challenges in addition to whatever information I may have received from the parents. The assessment also enables me discover the child's method of learning.
Goals:
Next, I make goals, short and long-term. I give a copy of the goals to the child, depending on the child's ability to read and understand but where the child is not, I try to explain in the simplest term to the child. I hand another copy to the parent(s) and discuss the importance of everyone being involved to be able to achieve the goals and I keep the last copy.
Make it fun/interactive;
I endeavor to keep it fun and avoid another school away from school situation especially where the motivation is low.
Independent work:
In my style of tutoring, once I teach a concept and give a few examples, I encourage the child to figure things out as this will boost the confidence of the child and motivate learning once he/she succeeds in figuring it out and they will want to continue to learn. I also use a mixture of teaching/coaching to give the child the confidence that he/she can do it on his/her own. I have found this extremely effective in motivating a child especially in a subject or area of a subject the child does not like.
Follow through:
This is very vital to the child's success because I understand that the more effort I make, the more effort the child will make and I try to pass on my enthusiasm for learning to the child. In addition, I also take time to celebrate the child's accomplishment with the child no matter how small.
