I have been tutoring and teaching high school math, SAT, ACT, PSAT, GRE and GMAT preparation for seven years. My approach is to create a positive and supportive environment to help students succeed. By breaking a problem down into smaller manageable steps, I can help identify and resolve issues that need improvement.
It's amazing how many students I have heard saying they're "just bad at math". But I've never met anyone who truly was. After determining where and why a student is struggling, whether it be fundamentals, problem solving approach or something else, I put together a plan that begins will small successes. Even a small success can do a lot for boosting confidence. And lack of confidence is often one of the things that holds students back from being successful in math.
I'm a certified Mathematics teacher - Texas, Grades 8-12 - and taught high school math with the Plano Independent School District for almost five years. Recently, I completed a contract position in math content development for an educational technology company. Prior to that I managed and tutored at an SAT ACT company in Plano.
Currently, I tutor and work part time as an instructor in GRE GMAT Quantitative at UT Dallas while also exploring careers in educational technology. I hold a B Sc in Electrical Engineering and have worked in the telecom and technology sector as a design engineer and program manager in Canada, Australia and the U.S.
I taught both Geometry and Pre-AP Geometry for almost five years with the Plano ISD. From experience, I know what concepts students tend to have difficulty with and how to make these concepts seem easier. I like to use a lot of diagrams and color in explanations and have made a lot of manipulatives and models to help those who have difficulty with spatial awareness.
Most geometry curriculum is algebra-based, so success in geometry depends not only on understanding geometric concepts, but also on having a good foundation in basic algebra. I also have a lot of experience tutoring students in algebra, so I work on strengthening algebra skills while solving geometry problems.
Excellent tutor for ACT/SAT math/science — Susan is a wonderful teacher that helped my daughter achieve a 36 on ACT math, a 35 on ACT science, and a 680 on the SAT math in a very short time frame. Susan was extremely patient and didn't move on until she was sure my daughter understood the concept. My daughter understood math well, but struggled with time management. Susan had many difficult problems from the numerous books she has, and tau ...
