Hi,
My name is Karen, and I love to teach. I graduated from Lake Forest College, a small school on the far north side of Chicago. There I earned a Bachelor's Degree in English, along with a minor in Spanish and secondary education. I then accepted a teaching position at St Marys School in Lake Forest, where I taught Junior High level English and social studies for three years.
After I retired to raise my two daughters, I did some substitute teaching both in the Chicago area and here, after we moved to Dallas, but found subbing much less rewarding. I also taught Spanish and tennis on a volunteer basis at the school my daughters attended. In recent years I began working with the LIFT {Literacy Instruction For Dallas} program teaching ESL and have loved the opportunity this afforded. It is this experience that led me to this interest in tutoring, as I felt I was able to make learning fun for the ESL students and that I could do the same for someone who was struggling in school.
I incorporate some role playing techniques and visual aids in my lessons and find it to be successful and entertaining. I have been tutoring for almost 2 years now and find it very rewarding. A large percentage of my work has been with ESL students of all levels of fluency, and I have enjoyed this experience immensely, as it has given me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and beliefs, while feeling that I was helping others to experience and to communicate in my culture. I have also worked with English, phonics, reading and writing students from the kindergarten on up through adult levels and have bonded with and loved each of these students. Each student has been unique and fun to work with. I have tutored students preparing for many standardized tests, including STARR, TAKS, SAT ACT, GED, TOEFL and the MCAT. I would love to make another new friend and to make learning fun for you or your favorite student.
