Hi,

My name is Karen, and I love to teach. I graduated from Lake Forest College, a small school on the far north side of Chicago. There I earned a Bachelor's Degree in English, along with a minor in Spanish and secondary education. I then accepted a teaching position at St Marys School in Lake Forest, where I taught Junior High level English and social studies for three years.

After I retired to raise my two daughters, I did some substitute teaching both in the Chicago area and here, after we moved to Dallas, but found subbing much less rewarding. I also taught Spanish and tennis on a volunteer basis at the school my daughters attended. In recent years I began working with the LIFT {Literacy Instruction For Dallas} program teaching ESL and have loved the opportunity this afforded. It is this experience that led me to this interest in tutoring, as I felt I was able to make learning fun for the ESL students and that I could do the same for someone who was struggling in school.

I incorporate some role playing techniques and visual aids in my lessons and find it to be successful and entertaining. I have been tutoring for almost 2 years now and find it very rewarding. A large percentage of my work has been with ESL students of all levels of fluency, and I have enjoyed this experience immensely, as it has given me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and beliefs, while feeling that I was helping others to experience and to communicate in my culture. I have also worked with English, phonics, reading and writing students from the kindergarten on up through adult levels and have bonded with and loved each of these students. Each student has been unique and fun to work with. I have tutored students preparing for many standardized tests, including STARR, TAKS, SAT ACT, GED, TOEFL and the MCAT. I would love to make another new friend and to make learning fun for you or your favorite student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have worked with English students from the kindergarten on up through adult levels and have bonded with and loved each of these students. I have taught all facets of English and will focus on whatever particular part of this multi-faceted subject the student feels he or she needs the most help with. Each student has been unique and fun to work with. I, of course, gear my teaching to the level and needs of each individual student and will work at whatever pace he or she is comfortable.

ESL/ESOL

A large percentage of my students are ESL students of all levels of fluency, and I have enjoyed this experience immensely, as it has given me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and beliefs while feeling that I was helping others to experience and to communicate in my culture. My students have been from Korea, China, India, Persia, Venezuela, Russia and Slovakia. I now feel that I have experience recognizing and perfecting the sounds that each of these countries does not have in their native tongue. I also have many new friends from all over the world.

Grammar

I focus on many different levels of grammar but tailor my teaching to the level and specific needs of the individual student. I can teach something as basic as irregular verb tenses or as advanced as the correct use of the subjunctive mood and complicated sentence structures using dependent clauses effectively.

Phonics

I am major advocate of phonics. I am truly convinced that it is one of the most important tools we can give students. Phonics sets the ground work for spelling, sounding out words, recognizing root words and learning and loving to read. I have worked with three private phonics students and two have significantly raised their scores on standardized tests. The third was a kindergartener and was not yet subjected to any standardized tests, but both her parents and I were pleased with the results.

Proofreading

One of the techniques I teach is to ask my students to read everything they are proofing out loud, softly, to themselves and I stress certain techniques for accomplishing this effectively and not missing any errors. Proofing is mainly the art of perfect concentration, assuming you have the skills to recognize errors when you see them. We talk about ways to achieve this level of focus.

Reading

I encourage students to keep a dictionary at hand when reading anything and to look up any word they are not sure of. I also encourage them to read, read, read----anything that might interest them---fiction or non-fiction---biography, science fiction, books magazines, newspapers, internet articles, fairy tales, whatever interests them and to do so with an open mind. When I have my younger students read aloud, we sound out phonetically, any word that they don't recognize and discuss the meaning of it.

Vocabulary

AH---vocabulary! One of the most important things you can do for yourself, your future, your career and your social relationships is to increase your vocabulary. Words empower you! The ability to pull up into your brain and then out of your mouth the exact word you want to get your point across can win you a job you desperately covet, persuade a room full of antagonists to convert to your line of thinking, manipulate a situation to your liking, and give you unbound potential. I stress vocabulary in many facets of my teaching of the English language. I love words and I will teach you to love them and how to go about it. We will discuss root words, foreign words that English has "borrowed" synonyms, homophones and the different ways and circumstances to use the words we learn. We will learn to turn each word into a different form; i.e., from noun to verb or adjective or adverb. You will "own" these words by the time we are through, and you will be on your way to being "empowered"!

Writing

The ability to communicate through the written word is essential to many facets of life. I have taught essay writing for standardized tests, email and business communication and writing profiles for clients, business letter writing such as composing a complaint about the level of service you received or drafting a cover letter for a job resume. I stress conciseness, perfect grammar, spelling and punctuation, logical thought process and vocabulary! I also like to introduce the concept of originality. How have you made your communication meet all the above standards and still be slightly unique? These basic principles are applicable to most writing, whether it is a business communique or a personal letter.
