Hello students and parents!
My name is Matt, and I'm a math, science, and test prep tutor with two years of experience under my belt. I've tutored math and science at all levels of grade school, from the elementary grade level up through high school, with a little college level tutoring thrown in for good measure. I've also tutored both the SAT and ACT and have extensive knowledge of the key differences between the two tests.
I have a bachelors degree from The University of Texas at Austin. My degree is in biology, with concentrations in cell/molecular biology and computational biology. I graduated in 2010 and spent the last two years tutoring at College Nannies & Tutors.
In my tutoring, I employ as many different types of learning (visual, auditory, tactile, etc.) as possible to increase my students' retention of knowledge. I love to use the "Show Me" method, where after teaching a method or concept to a student, I ask the student to either solve a few problems without help or to explain the method to me in their own words.
I can't wait to hear from you! Hello students and parents!

Matt is GREAT! He goes the extra mile to make sure my daughter understands the Geometry concepts. He is patient, professional, and flexible!! Two thumbs up!
I liked how the tutor looked at my sons' SAT data & gave each one of them the tools for success.
Brent feels Matt is helping him. The subject is still tough for him, but Matt helps him walk through the problems very well.
Matthew is very patient, and encourages my son in studying for the SAT! I know that my son will do well on the SAT, thanks to Matthew tutoring skills.
Matthew is very thorough and we are starting to see the results of the tutor sessions. I would recommend Matthew for anyone looking for a tutor.
My son is preparing for the ACT. Matthew has shown him testing strategies that will help him increase his score. He has explained math concepts and problems to my son that seemed difficult before he began tutoring. My son's overall confidence and ability level in all of the areas of the test have increased. My son came home from his tutoring session with Matthew and said I am ready for the test and am looking forward to it! Never have those words come out of his mouth. Thanks to Matthew!!
Matthew is a very personable smart individual and has really connected with my son. His efforts are appreciated and have assisted my son immensely in raising his grades.
I could tell my child felt very lifted up and more confident after his first session with Matthew. I'm so excited to have found such a great resource for my child.
Matt knew the math material very well and presented it in an easy to understand format. He explained the math concept at hand then provided examples to relate to the topic.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've tutored students of all levels in Algebra 1: students who were behind in the class and trying to catch up, others who were trying to maintain an A average, and even a couple who had changed school districts and were trying to adjust to what the new school's curricula were. Algebra is one of my favorite classes to tutor because there are so many things learned in the class that can be used in everyday life.
Besides Chemistry, Algebra 2 is the class I've tutored the most students in. Algebra 2 introduces many difficult, new subjects, such as imaginary numbers and conic sections. With so much to remember, it tends to give students trouble. It is my goal to make these subjects understandable.
Biology has been a passion of mine since 8th grade. In high school, I took the Biology AP exam, so I'm familiar with the curriculum. I majored in Biology at UT, with concentrations in both Cell/Molecular Biology and Computational Biology.
Calculus was my favorite class in high school. Some of the topics can be difficult to learn, but much of the later topics are just new applications of old ones.
As a Biology major at UT, I took many different Chemistry courses and developed a deep appreciation for the discipline. In high school, I took the AP Chemistry exam, so I'm familiar with its curriculum.
Geometry can be frustrating to many students because it introduces topics that don't seem to build on what has been previously learned in pre-algebra and algebra. There is an abundance of new vocabulary to learn, and if the class includes proofs, then there are a number of theorems and postulates to memorize. Geometry is an important class for students who want to do well in pre-calculus later on, as it introduces students to trigonometry.
Precalculus is a continuation of both algebra 2 and geometry, as it builds upon topics from each in preparation for calculus. It is one of my favorite math classes to tutor because of its frequent use of graphs and pictures, as well as its introduction to many of the concepts encountered in calculus.
