HEY! I am a super tutor with a world of experience. I was educated in the old-school classical way of
Greek and Roman History and Latin and Greek languages. Also, attending a liberal arts college, I had core courses in the history of European thought, religion and war. I graduated with my first degree with a 3.87 GPA. I got a little bored the last semester and let one Latin class fall. I worked for a year after my Bachelor's Degree, teaching English Composition at Texas A&M Commerce while also working for oil companies, doing legal title research.

I saved my money to go to Germany and study at the Goethe Institute in Munich, Germany. This is when there was still an East and a West Germany. I lived in locations in the far north and far south and then went to the University of Vienna Austria for the winter semester. I had the full range of accents. It was like living in the deep south, the Midwest and maybe Brooklyn.

I then started studying back home in Washington DC but really needed funds so I enlisted in the US Army and tested well enough to be considered for an intelligence position as a Russian Analyst. I graduated with honors from the Defense Language Institute in 1985 and was honorably released from active enlisted duty to enter an officer training course an attend Yale University and study religion. I again reviewed western European history as it is so closely tied to the history of the religion in "thought" if not always in "deed".

I finished my studies at Yale while serving as an Associate Pastor at a Methodist church before leaving for a summer of study at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I returned to an assistant pastor's position in Arlington, Virginia and continued studies in ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington DC. I left the DC area for a church in north Texas where I served two years as a pastor. I then spent the next 9 years in Dallas in sales positions.

I returned to teaching in 2001, teaching English as a Second Language in Korea, China and Mexico. I had to return home for a few years before leaving again in 2009 to teach for the Ministry of Defense in Kuwait where I instructed at the Naval Institute. My next contract was for the Saudi Arabian National Guard. I spent a short while in Oman before finding a good position in the Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi. After two years, I was ready to get away from the desert and sun and I spent 8 months teaching English in Hanoi, Vietnam before coming home to Texas to work for a college friend who has a school for kids with special needs.

The last year I taught all subjects to High School students. This summer I tutored a brother and sister in reading and math. I am as well-rounded and well-traveled as any native English teacher and 5th generation native Texan you can find! My parents are 87 and 84 and still alive. My father was a Lawyer and my mother had a Masters of Fine Arts. I am proud of my heritage and state and country. I have seen a lot of poverty and oppression and many beautiful simple things. I am capable in many subjects including finite or basic mathematics. I have a way with numbers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I am a student of history in general and while I have probably studied specifically more European History, it was often telling me more about the history of my own country.

Bible Studies

I have a Master's Degree in Religion from Yale Divinity School and spent another 48 hours of Seminary to become ordained in 1990.

Classics

I was a Classics major in college. My Bachelor of Arts GPA was 3.87 and my GPA in my major was 3.9. I studied Roman and Greek History and Latin and Greek Languages.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English to many age groups in eight different countries.

European History

I went to a liberal arts college where history of western culture was part of the core curriculum. Then as a religion major at Yale, I essentially went through a deeper study of European history as it was very driven by the history of Christianity.

Geography

I have always studied maps and country locations and have lived and studied in many different countries. I spend spare time studying the way the world map has changed over the centuries as well.

Grammar

I had to learn grammar better than most native speakers in order to teach English overseas. I also improved my English grammar by having studied so many foreign languages and their grammar structure.

IELTS

I taught IELTS preparation for four years in the Middle East. I assisted college-level students in their study and practice in preparation for the exams. I also taught beginner-level students but all the materials we used were to focus their skills on the IELTS exams.

Literature

I was a Classics Major in college and had many classes in Literature -- even in different languages. I also attended one year of graduate school in English where I was even more greatly exposed. I am a member of the National Honor Society in English.

Microsoft Windows

I know and have used Windows since it came out and I can usually figure out problems that others cannot when something happens. I could easily teach someone how to use Windows effectively

Microsoft Word

I have used Word for many years in many different capacities and could successfully teach anyone how to navigate and employ the program to their best ability.

Reading

I have been working for many years with the process of learning to read and being aware of whether a student is comprehending what they read as they read it. I recognize what type of tool they need to employ in order to read and comprehend better and faster.

Religion

What should I say? I was a Classics major with a minor in Religion and went on to complete Master of Arts in Religion at Yale University Divinity. I had class in the room where the RSV of the Bible was written! I went on to do another 48 hours of Seminary at Wesley Theological and Perkins Seminaries plus spending a summer at Hebrew University in Jerusalem where I studied language intensively and would walk the old city's street for hours. Of course then I spent the next 7 years as either a student, assistant, associate or sole pastor of my own Methodist congregation. I chose to leave this voluntarily.

Russian

It has been 30 years, but I was without question an honor graduate from the Defense Language Institute's 50 week course of learning Russian from Russians (before the end of the Cold War}. I graduated with a 97% grade average.

Special Needs

I taught special needs students during the last school year. Most were dyslexic but I had many who just had severe ADD. I also had students with similar inabilities to go outside themselves in any manner without fear. Although I only taught these students (and an Aspergers student)I felt like it was where I had always been meant to be. If I could afford to continue this job, it was mine to keep

World History

I am a student of World History and most of my formal education covered the history of many other countries than my own. I continued to study and explore the history of the rest of the world after finishing school. Then I traveled around it!

Writing

Writing is my most favorite thing and my best form of communication. I taught my first English Composition class at Texas A&M University, Commerce in 1981. Teaching that class improved my own writing and ability to teach writing as well. I worked also with many foreign students and their writing while teaching ESL.
