I teach, it's what I do. From the time I was in high school, I wanted to be a teacher. I had the most incredible U.S. History teacher for the 11th grade. It is because of her that I became one. She is my example, my reason for being in public education.

I have been a teacher for 14 years and I have taught English, World Geography and U.S. History in Grades 7 and 9 and at the college level. I have a Humanities degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas Teacher Certification in Composite Social Studies, English, English-Language Arts and Reading. I also have a Master's Degree in History from University of Houston - Clear Lake. Currently, I am an adjunct history professor at Houston Community College - Northwest.

Whether teaching or tutoring, I am always looking for a better way to explain the concepts and events covered in whatever subject I am working with. I am always looking for a way to make the subject real, to allow my students have that 'Wait! I get it!' moment.

American History

This subject covers all aspects of U.S. History, from before the creation of the U.S. all the way to the modern day. Specific topics that can be covered are: The American Revolution, the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, the Robber Barons, World War I, The Great Depression, World War II, The Great Society, Vietnam, the 1980's, the 1990's, the 1st Gulf War, the 2nd Gulf War, September 11, 2001 and the presidential election of 2008.

Vocabulary

This covers the understanding of what words mean and why we use them as we do.

Grammar

This area will cover all areas of grammar including usage, punctuation, subject/verb agreement, tenses and idioms.

Reading

This covers how to read critically, how to retain what you have read and how to understand why the author wrote what they did.

Writing

This covers how to communicate effectively with the written word and how to properly punctuate a sentence, along with the skill of writing essays and longer papers.

Geography

This is study of people, places and things. It is the study of the cultures, the physical landmarks, the governments of the world. Also included will the study of political boundaries as well as physical ones.

English

This subject covers the areas of literature, reading critically and writing a grammatically correct sentence. It also covers how to write an essay as well as longer papers.

Government & Politics

This is the study of how people run their countries, states and cities. All aspects of government are covered including the different types of government and how effective each system is. Politics will cover why it exists and how politics shapes the governments of the world today.

Literature

This covers literature and all its component parts, including reading critically, retaining what was read and understanding why the specific book, novel or essay was written.

World History

Covers history of the world, starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, moving through the medieval period and into the modern era.

GED

This area is for help in passing the General Educational Development exam. All areas with the exceptions of Math and Science will be discussed.

SAT Reading

This covers test taking strategies for mastering the reading portion of the SAT.

Macintosh

I have used the Macintosh computer since 1986. I am well versed in how the system works and what can be done with it. This subject will consist of learning how the operating system works and how to use to the Macintosh properly.

TAKS

I have given the TAKS test many, many times. At the high school I taught at, I was chosen every time to give the TAKS exam (for five years).
