Hello, future tutees.
I am a certified Texas Educator in the subjects of speech communication, English - English Language Arts, and Theatre Education. I have taught in the public school system for 19 years. I have also been an assistant principal for 5 of the 19 years. Currently, I am working in a charter school in Odessa TX as their guidance counselor.

I am also a licensed professional counselor intern (I am licensed to deliver counseling services in various mental health need areas; I am being supervised by a licensed professional counselor that has a supervision certification. In other words, I can do everything except open my own practice. I have also been an academic counselor on the community college level helping students with all aspects of college life.

In education and counseling, my philosophy is the same: you are responsible for your life so it is important that you fully and willingly participate in the entire process.

My tutoring methods are simple: Pre/Post assessments, foundational information, guided practice, and finally independent practice. If you are able to teach me the concepts, then I know you understand without any doubts. Most of my tutoring experience has taken place in the school setting. I am ready to expand my influence to help others in need.

Looking forward to partnering with you to help solidify your education foundation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

In my 20 years working in the education field, I have had dealings with students with special needs.

As an assistant principal, I has to sit in ARD meetings as the person authorized to release school resource to make sure that we were able to educate a student by supplying them with accommodations that would alleviate the hindrance(s) caused by the debilitating condition.

As the academic counselor at Odessa College, the program that I work for accommodated many students with handicaps. I was able to work with them and sometimes helping them overcome fears of dealing with people without handicaps.

Currently, I am dealing with high school students that are dyslexic or/and ADD/ADHA mostly. A few with physical disabilities.
The policy is to give them reasonable time needed to complete assignments and test.

Bible Studies

I have had two church leadership classes that focused on Discipleship at the church I was attending.

My wife and I led 2 home groups (the first was based on Purpose driven life by Rick Warren and the second based on curriculum given by the church).

I have belonged to 3 home groups before meeting my wife and a men's group not affiliated with a church but just men that know Jesus.

College Counseling

In my work experience, I have directed college students in selecting a subject to study, following a degree plan, and establish their schedule for the upcoming semester.

I have also had to assist students filling out financial aid forms and finding other funding sources to pay for college. I proofread papers, and led the students in various cultural settings (college campus visits, museums, end of the year trips, resume updates and development, etc.

In my current position, I use my college counseling experience to help inform students about training after high school (college, university, trade school, or community college continuing education programs.

10/15/2008 - 4/15/2009 Interim Director of Student Support Services

8/12 - present Graduation Coach (oversee college counseling, dual credit, financial aid, etc.

Dyslexia

Currently, I am dealing with high school students that are dyslexic or/and ADD/ADHA mostly. A few with physical disabilities. The policy is to give them reasonable time needed to complete assignments and test.

My experience consist of having the special education staff re-evaluate students every year to see if needs have changed. With Dyslexia students, this happens often. Various educational aids are used to help correct the situation for example colored overlays, ruler with a see-through middle, using a ruler to highlight sentence being read, a highlighter marker, etc.

Using these aids on a regular basis helps train the brain to see and learn in a productive manner. Most times, students will not need the aid every time and some will not need them at all.

Elementary (K-6th)

My teaching certification level is 6 - 12 (secondary).

My first year of teaching was at a middle school in East Texas as the 6th grade Language Arts Teacher. I covered spelling, reading, grammar, and writing.

During my teacher education, I observed in two elementary schools.

My experience with students on the elementary level is limited. I learned that if you walk them through the steps and give them a process to follow--concepts and subjects are easier to master. (I find that true for older students, also)

English

I am a Texas certified teacher in the areas of speech communication, theatre arts, English and English Language Arts for grade levels 6th grade through 12th grade.

I have taught 6th grade English/Language Arts, 9th/10th grade English (including practical writing and technical writing)and to 11th and 12th graders.

Subjects covered for 6th grade English are literature, grammar, writing, reading, and spelling. English on this level is still consider language arts and is taught in isolation (each subject is focused on).

For grades 7 - 12, the focus turns to literature, writing, and reading comprehension. The other aspects are reviewed when needed but whole lessons are not developed just to teach grammar and spelling. English becomes integrated by using literature for reading comprehension exercises and this lends itself to addressing the writing process.

Grammar

Grammar is the lynch pin to verbal/written communication. It determines gender, place in time, type of sentence, proper placement of structure, and placement of elements within a sentence (action, subject, etc.) Knowing grammar help you communicate your ideas on a different level using specifics for guidance towards clear understanding.

Literature

Literature gives us a glance at who we are as people and a society. It tells the stories of our thoughts, feelings, our lives, our governments, and our beliefs. It gives us an opportunity to look at ourselves and make adjustments or verifies that all is well.

Proofreading

Checking your completed tasks has been proven to be a very valuable technique in assuring appropriate time and exceptional quality was given. The written word is no exception. Proofreading ensures the writer that all elements are in place for clear and appropriate communication.

Psychology

At Sul Ross State University from 8/95 to 5/97, I studied education psychology where I received my masters degree. I returned to Sul Ross to get another masters and I had taken more psychology classes to meet the state requirement for licensed professional counselor.

I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern (meaning I am able to deliver services as a counselor but I am not able to open my own practice). I am also the Graduation Coach at my school where I focus mostly on getting students into training after high school.

I have had two full time jobs as counselor--academic counselor at a junior college and a therapist at the local rape crisis center.

Public Speaking

As a college counselor, I had to do presentations to the students in the Student Support Services such as networking in which I discussed the need to be socially available to people that could be instrumental in helping them career wise.

I was also a presenter for a non-profit organization (People of Principle) that went into state prisons in the West Texas area and taught healthy marriage skills and ideas to the incarcerated person and their significant other.

I have also done my networking presentation at the college I was once employed for their mentoring program Spring semester 2012.

Having been a teacher and an assistant principal, I have been in front of the classroom delivering instruction to student and teachers. Also, I have spoken in front of parents and other people during 3 high school graduations--two times I introduced the featured speaker and once I gave the prayer.

Reading

I am a Texas certified teacher in the areas of speech communication, theater arts, English and English Language Arts for grade levels 6th grade through 12th grade.

I have taught 6th grade English/Language Arts, 9th/10th grade English (including practical writing and technical writing)and to 11th and 12th graders.

My focus was on reading comprehension and the entire writing process. Complete understanding of the author's intent in the story and the message conveyed is the entire purpose of reading comprehension as well as lending the an accurate written expression based on the author's intent. Vocabulary was key in developing precise and concise writing without using the same words over and over.

Special Needs

Spelling

I am a Texas certified teacher in the areas of speech communication, theatre arts, English and English Language Arts for grade levels 6th grade through 12th grade.

I have taught 6th grade English/Language Arts, 9th/10th grade English (including practical writing and technical writing) and to 11th and 12th graders.

The last grade to address spelling in isolation was 6th grade. In my experience, a spelling list was issued Monday morning and students had to do assignments throughout the week that addressed the spelling words for that week. The expectation was all words were to be spelled, pronounced, and defined correctly. On Fridays, there would be a spelling test to check mastery. Emphasis for spelling would be the importance of clear and focused communication; misunderstandings occur when meaning is not fully understood.

Study Skills

During my time as the Academic Counselor for Student Support Services at Odessa College, I assisted students in note taking skills, setting a studying time table based on the first test to be given, what to study, skimming the chapters for information using key words from the questions, rewriting notes, making flash cards, and forming study groups based on subjects.

I also added a few test taking strategies that would help them during ther actual test such as don't study the night before a test--just look over key information, get a good night's rest, locate testing site few days ahead of actual testing date, etc.

Currently, I impart many of the same strategies to my high school students but they do not readily accept the help. I continue to talk to them about the need for proper study skills and how that will help them retain more information.

TAKS

Currently, I am the Graduation Coach/assistant testing coordinator at Richard Milburn Academy Odessa. In the summer of 2012, I tutored 3 students in the ELA TAKS writing and reading. Also, that school year--I taught English to 9th and 10th graders where I focused on TAKS skills for reading and writing.

STAAR test (the new TAKS) is similar in need for knowing writing and reading skills, but the lenght and time limited changed the format.

Basic idea - use literatuea as the basis for developing a writing assignment through answer a three overarching questions. These questions in turn would develop into the rough draft of a paper. Followed by proofreading, editing, rewriting, and final draft.

Theatre

At the University of Texas at Austin I participated in many stage crews for theater productions (lights, sound, costumes, sets, and props) as well as a couple of stage appearances as a minor character in a few small productions.

In the summer 1990 of returned to UT after my first year of teaching(1989-90 school year)to attend a Drama workshop where I was an assistant to High School drama teachers. I did set design, script analysis, rehearse actors, directed a scene, and stage managed a whole production.

In the fall of 1991, I taught Theater Arts part-time for one year at a junior high school in Austin TX. The subjects covered included theater history, stage design, script analysis, and acting.

In the fall of 1992, I accepted a full time teaching job as the drama/speech teacher at a freshman school in Midland TX.

Since this last direct experience with drama, I have been using the skill aquired in getting in front of the classroom and do "dramatic" teacher for my students which I still do to this day. I also use it during my public speaking engagements.

Vocabulary

I am a Texas certified teacher in the areas of speech communication, theatre arts, English and English Language Arts for grade levels 6th grade through 12th grade.

I have taught 6th grade English/Language Arts, 9th/10th grade English (including practical writing and technical writing)and to 11th and 12th graders.

Vocabulary is very important in selecting the best words to convey an idea, concept, or instruction. It brings a flavor to your writings and language. Finally, it helps open doors for opportunities as you communicate with people at various socioeconomic levels.

Writing

The written word is very important to master in today's society where everything hinges on what is said and reinforced in writing. From filling out forms to making million dollar deals, if you don't what is in the document then there is a good chance that something may not be in your favor. Expression of self is very important and you must be able to use the written word as a tool for clear and concise structure leaving nothing open for interpretation.
