I have studied Economics at the graduate level, and worked in business for the past fifteen years, where I have seen the law of supply and demand in action. Being savvy about how to roll with economic tide in business can be exciting, because you never know what changes might take place in the marketplace and which might affect supply, demand, and response to product pricing.

Having worked with large business systems (ERP) for the past fifteen years, has given me even deeper insight into how businesses and their customers must respond in our current global economy.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored and taught these ages, specializing in mathematics, spelling, reading and science.

I have a BS degree in Mathematics from UT Arlington, and taught with Project SEED in Dallas, which teaches advanced mathematics to students in grades 4, 5, and 6. They use the Socratic method.

The result of teaching math using the Socratic method is that students begin to question in other subjects, and then they start digging for the answers themselves.

My goal is to help make students become lifelong learners like myself, with same enthusiasm and hunger that I have for intellectual stimulation. I have proven skills to do this, and enjoy working with children.

Elementary Math

I am skilled at the Socratic method of instruction in Math for elementary age students.

The Socratic method involves not just asking questions about math problems, but also involves asking them how these problems might be used to solve real-world problems. This encourages them to 1) Think for themselves 2) Learn to ask additional questions beyond just "What is 1 + 1?" and 3)Lighten up about Math. Math is not hard - for someone who loves it.

I also inject humor into my lessons, which children love. Sometimes when students get bogged down or saturated, I will ask an off the wall question to redirect them, like "What is air?", and then refocus them back on the math once their thoughts have had a chance to reset.

Elementary Science

I have worked with elementary students in all areas of study, and I have a particular interest in the areas of Mathematics, Science, and Languages.

I started tutoring Elementary Science when I was in high school, and my next door neighbor's daughter, who was about ten at the time, needed help with her homework in Math and Science.

All students I have worked with in the past have seen a vast improvement, not only in their grades, but also their interest and love for the subject. Learning is a fascinating journey, and that is what I try to impart to every student.

My experience includes working with native English speakers as well as Spanish and Chinese-speaking students who speak no English, but are taking English courses. Because I know something of etymology, this helped me teach them how to spell better, and is something that I use even now with students to help them stay interested and engaged.

Being good at foreign languages, and interested in the history of the English language, has enhanced my understanding of the language constructs of English.

Across languages, there seems to always be the need to somehow indicate gender, as well as verb tenses, qualifiers of nouns and verbs, prepositions and conjugations. I have an advanced knowledge of these in English.

Fortran was the very first programming language I ever learned, and I worked with Fortran when I first got out of college.

I loved it because, at the time it was concise compared to other languages and very logical.

Fortran comments are formed with a "C" in the first column of the line. There are several data types available, including: integer, real, double-precision, etc. Other aspects of the language include looping (DO, DO WHILE), IF..THEN..ELSEIF constructs, etc.

I studied French for six years as part of a NAFTA language certificate program offered by Collin County Community College.

I also work with students who struggle with French to help them pronounce it correctly, conjugate verbs correctly, and in general gain an understanding of it.

Having studied Spanish first, I well understand the grammatical constructs of French. French is similar in many ways to both Spanish and Portuguese, even though it is often pronounced quite differently.

As students gain proficiency with the language, they truly begin to appreciate what a beautiful language it becomes to them. C'est vraiment magnifique!

Microsoft Outlook

I have worked for many years in the corporate world where I gained skills with using Outlook to manage tasks, journal on progress, and use the calendar as a time-management tool.

Additionally, I know how to create personal folders and move emails to them to reduce the size of an Inbox. You can create signatures that can be entered automatically. If you go out of town, and won't have access to email, you can create an auto-response that is sent to all parties copied in the email. I can show how to access the Global address list, how to create distribution lists, and more.

Having worked as a teacher, I have used phonics to reinforce students' abilities not only learn to read, but also to improve their spelling. Also, I have found that the faster students are able to read, the more they understand and retain.

I used to work with Project SEED in Dallas. Though our focus was to teach Mathematics using the Socratic method, we used tools such as phonics, and discussion of how to study to entertain and engage the students and expand them beyond their regular thinking patterns, and help them "think outside the box".

I have many years of experience working with children to teach them to read in English, Spanish and French.

I use phonics to help a student master reading, and am skilled with keeping students focused and engaged.

With the right encouragement, students learn to love learning, and learning becomes a reward, instead of a chore. Let me show your student how they can empower themselves in their learning journey.

I began studying Spanish when I was young, and studied it for eight years in total. When I was in High School, I studied Spanish and Mexican culture in Mexico for two summers, where I gained fluency. I have also worked with business software for many years, where I had the opportunity to perform training in Spanish in Guatemala and Mexico. I have spoken Spanish for more than 30 years altogether. In 1998, I achieved a NAFTA language certificate for both Spanish and French.

I am experienced with teaching and tutoring children. I am enthusiastic and mature, and I have sound techniques for keeping students of all ages interested and engaged.

Study Skills

I have worked with both child students and adult students to help them be efficient with their study techniques and habits.

I teach them how to make power notes, use note cards, and use memorization techniques such as word linking and pegged list techniques, etc. for use in mnemonic memorization methods.

Additionally for focus, I teach students how to break larger projects into smaller pieces so that they can tackle one piece at a time, and I give them tools for monitoring their progress.
