I have 44 years of experience teaching in prestigious private schools (42 at St. Mark's School of Texas, Dallas. I teach kids; the subject matters less. My experience begins with 7th graders and goes on through senior year. My education took place in England, but I found my way to Texas and became an American citizen. I am currently retired and available 24/7.

I have had great success teaching Latin, and that is my first love. I have learned from my experience to listen to students and to respect their needs. I have also taught English language and literature with a special emphasis on writing.

My approach to essay writing is to teach analysis and outlining. Students need to become more self-confident; they just have to tap into their own ideas and learn how to become simple, clear, and cogent. Sentence structure and grammar form a part of those three concepts.

Grammar

Do you want good grammar or good taste? Well, I want both. Anyway good grammar is good taste.

Writing

So you want to be a writer? Nope. So you have to be a writer? Whichever, in this day, we all have to be thinkers and communicators.
Writing begins with thinking of ideas. Thinking requires words. Communicating shares those words and thoughts simply, clearly, and cogently.
Teaching writing, then, necessarily involves teaching thinking and the best way to share those thoughts. Simple sentences, clear expression, and cogent argumentation can be taught in that process.

English

I have taught 7th grade and 10th grade English. My second degree is an MA from Middlebury in English.

SAT Reading

I have taught literature and careful reading for over forty years. Recently, I have worked with a couple of sophomores, including one from St. Mark's. If reading is an issue, then writing probably is too.

ESL/ESOL

I took 4 years of high school French in the UK and I have lived in Mexico for 8 months. I have taught Latin and English in private schools for 44 years. I have a great deal of knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Classics

I have an MA from oxford university. I graduated in 1962 after four years study of Greek, Latin, ancient history, and modern and ancient philosophy. I also have 44 years of experience teaching high school and middle school.
