I am a 26 year veteran teacher who has worked extensively in the core subjects with children who difficulty learning and are considered at risk. My experience and degrees are in the areas of Learning Disabilities, Autism, and Reading. I have extensive expertise is in the areas of reading, math and the process of learning, and am just as capable of teaching reading and higher math skills. I have been extremely successful in helping students pass TAKS with a 98 percent passage rate. Throughout my career as a teacher I have help ESL children develop the English skills necessary to be successful in the classroom.

I hold an elementary certification from Michigan. I also hold Master Reading, Special Education, and ESL certifications from Texas in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade.

I believe that all children are capable of learning if given the opportunity and the correct method of instruction. I use a hands on approach to assist children in making learning come alive and relevant to them. For this reason I utilize the students strengths, and learning styles to assist them in overcoming their difficulty with a subject.

ADD/ADHD

As a special education teacher I have consistently worked with ADD/ADHD children. In addition to working with them I have was awarded a grant from Sherman Foundation for materials to assist ADD/ADHD children. I have also written a published article to assist parents with ADD/ADHD children with study skills.

Aspergers

My bacelors degree is in the area of Special Education with an emphasis on Emotionally Disturbance. Therefore, I received training in the education of those who exhibit Autism. One of the forms of Autism is Aspergers. In additon to recieving training during college, I have also recieved updated training on effective techniques for those with Aspergers. I have also, worked with those who exphibit Aspergers during my 26 year career as a special education teacher.

Autism

I have my BA in emotionally Impaired as part of my BA it was required for us to several behavorial techniques to assist children with autism, to improve their communication, behavioral and academic skills. Since then I have had training in TEACCH, Social Stories, and SERCTS, Positive Behavior Support.

This training has allowed me to be an effective teacher with children who have autism, sensory difficulties as well as behavior concerns.

Dyslexia

Throughout my 26 year career I have worked with students who have dyslexia and have used a multidisciplinary approach, which has been very successful. Additionally, I have a Master's in Learning Disabilities in which Dyslexia is considered a subcategory.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with elementary children for 21 of my 25 years in public education. I hold an elementary certification from the state of Michigan, a Master Reading, special ed and ESL certification in the state of TX.

Elementary Math

As an elementary teacher, who has worked successfully with those students who have difficulty understanding mathematical concepts. I utilize a hands on approach to explain Math which can be a very abstract concepts. I have the ability to prepare my students for the state assessment and have a 95% success rate upon the first assessment.

ESL/ESOL

I have a current Texas certification in ESL preK through 12th grade. In addition to teaching ESL children both in Texas and in the Netherlands. I have worked as a district ESL coordinator which I wrote board policy regarding the operation of the ESL program for Blue Ridge ISD, TX.

Geometry

Throughout various times in my career I have taught high school Geometry and Algebra to those who were struggling in these subjects.

Phonics

Since I have a Master Reading teacher endorsement on my certification I have studied extensively how to teach reading.

Reading

I received a Master Reading teacher certification through the state of Texas in 2001. Since that time I have assisted many students in the development of the process of reading, including those with Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities and autism. I realize that there is no one method that is effective for every child, and therefore I present the material utilizing a student's learning style to become efficient readers.

Sewing

I have been a seamstress since I learned to sew in high school. I have made several of my clothes and for those in my family. I have successfully made a tailored wool jacket. I also incorporate several specialty hand stitching into my garments so they have a professional look to them.

Special Needs

Over the 25 years of teaching I have worked with special needs children from grades K-12. Several of my classroom were in alternative setting in which half of my students were classified as special education. I am certified to teach special education in three states: Iowa, Texas and Michigan.

Study Skills

As a teacher of students who have difficulty learning, I have shown them more effective ways to be productive learners. This involves everything from how to use an agenda, time management, organizing their study area, effective communication techniques to understand what the teacher really wants, how to approach the subjects necessary to study that evening. I also, teach my students to recognize their learning style to they can become more efficient and effective learners.
