I believe that all children are capable of learning if given the opportunity and the correct method of instruction. I use a hands on approach to assist children in making learning come alive and relevant to them. For this reason I utilize the students strengths, and learning styles to assist them in overcoming their difficulty with a subject.

I waited a long time to write this review because I was not sure how to put into words how much Maria has helped my son. We started working with her at the beginning of second grade. My son was just keeping up and had some major academic gaps (math- spelling- reading). Since working with her, he has gained confidence and dramatically improved his test scores. His teacher, who has been teaching for a long time and is wonderful said, “I am not sure who your tutor is, but she is wonderful. He tells me things she says, and I see what he has learned and I am so impressed. I have seen and heard about a lot of tutors in my time, but you have a great one”. Maria is in tune with what his struggles are, what frustrates him, and how he learns best. He has never ONCE said he does not want to meet and work with her. Actually, he WANTS to. It helps him feel like he has his school week under control and takes away his stress. I am so blessed to have found her!
We first met Maria back in early 2014 when we were hoping to find someone to help our son with his handwriting skills.
Upon reading the reviews from other parents, and more specifically seeing all of her qualifications, we quickly decided to take advantage of her expertise and supplement this goal with an added emphasis on academics as well.
Maria has proven herself to be an asset beyond belief, and after only a few weeks we were able to see dramatic improvements in our son's performance.
We have tried 4-5 other tutors from different agencies and no one has been able to match Maria's level of efficiency nor her level of achievement.
Through her caring interaction with our son, she has brilliantly performed where all the others had failed.
We highly recommend her without any reservations if you are looking for a person who can help your child with whatever their learning needs may be!
Maria has wonderful way of engaging my daughter during her tutoring sessions. We have just had 9 sessions and already my daughter has demonstrated progress in skill strategies for elementary math and is gaining confidence in her own abilities. We came from AR and she was in the Gifted and Talented program, but when we came to TX she was way behind in her math strategy skills. My daughter just got her Interim Report and she achieved a 99% in Math!!! I am confident that Maria is knowledgeable and is a "true educator" in her behavior modification/ motivating ability. My daughter looks forward to her tutoring sessions. I fully recommend Maria as an excellent tutor!!!
Maria has tutored my son for 5 months and the change has been an answered prayer. My ADHD son no longer acts out in class because he now has understanding and his self esteem has gone up. He looks forward to Maria's weekly visits and enjoys every minute. She keeps things interesting for him which is what he needs with an attention issue. I highly recommend her.
UPDATE: After nearly one year of consistent tutoring from Maria, I still can't say enough wonderful things about her. She now tutors my 7 year old daughter as well as my 10 year old son and the only problem is "who gets to go first!" They look forward to her sessions, she keeps them focused and interested and they both grasp concepts because of her strategic technique. Their progress is remarkable and her professionalism is unwavering. She is as delightful as she is effective.
Just had our first lesson with Maria last friday on 06/21/2013 and my kids already adore her. (so do we)
She relates well with my two girls, she really knows what she is doing and how to streamline it for our two girls. Really impressed, you can see she loves what she is doing. I already feel a sense of relief just knowing we have our kids on the right track with Maria. Recently I get that just school isn't enough (at least for our two children) we need to give them more so they have the tools to carry on through high school, college and adulthood. Every chance along the way to help them be successful and Maria is for sure the best investment towards that.
Thank you Maria, we look forward to a long relationship with you and are grateful to have you working with us for our kids.
My son really enjoys learning with Maria. She makes his lessons so much fun and he really looks forward to seeing her.
We started using Maria for our daughter who is now in seventh grade. Our daughter didnt like math and was very frustrated in class. She just was not getting it. Maria changed all that for our daughter, she actually likes math and is excited about it. Maria encourages the children and she is genuine, caring, and her approach to teaching is exceptional. I would highly recommend Maria as a tutor.
Maria tutored our son in 3rd grade reading comprehension. He went from a low “C” student to an “A” student in six weeks. She is patient and caring and my son loved her.
My wife and I have entered into a business venture that requires a good handle on math skills to perform the necessary accounting and finance. After having no exposure to math for several years, my wife needed help. She was also afraid, embarrassed, defensive and angry that the world could be so complicated. Maria was able to tailor lessons for her, has helped tremendously to minimize the threat that had hold of my wife's overall attitude. My wife is learning the skills she needs, and is making great progress. Maria is fantastic!
Maria is knowledgeable, she knows her craft. Much like a carpenter arriving to a job without his toolbelt, Maria is always ready with tools and she does not practice cookie cutter strategies. Most teachers in the classroom have one way to educate a child and if the child does not capture the data, they are left behind. My child is excited about his lesson with Maria,he feels the fun and nurturing exuded throughout each lesson.I highly recommend her for any child battling how to get up to speed quickly!
Maria has been tutoring our son, who is currently a second grader, since the beginning of May 2010. We choose Maria based on her impressive credentials. We needed a tutor w/extensive knowledge in reading, phonological awareness and comprehension. Since our son has been going to Maria, he has gone up 6 levels in his reading, and his sentence structure and writing has improved greatly.
If you're looking for a good tutor to get the job done, hopefully you will consider Maria.
Maria R. tutors my granddaughter and I am very, very, pleased with the progress being made in
reading and in math. My daughter has ADD and Maria R. has all the right abilities to reach her.
I can not say enough about her.
Maria is wonderful! My son usually takes awhile to warm up to adults especially when it comes to school related relationships. He adores Maria and actually looks forward to his tutoring sessions. She has made it fun and interesting for him. He has some LD's that have made language arts difficult for him before. she has taken away the frustrations for him:)
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Since that time I have assisted many students in the development of the process of reading, including those with Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities and autism. I have been a seamstress since I learned to sew in high school. I have made several of my clothes and for those in my family. I have successfully made a tailored wool jacket. I also incorporate several specialty hand stitching into my garments so they have a professional look to them.
Over the 25 years of teaching I have worked with special needs children from grades K-12. Several of my classroom were in alternative setting in which half of my students were classified as special education. I am certified to teach special education in three states: Iowa, Texas and Michigan.
As a teacher of students who have difficulty learning, I have shown them more effective ways to be productive learners. This involves everything from how to use an agenda, time management, organizing their study area, effective communication techniques to understand what the teacher really wants, how to approach the subjects necessary to study that evening.
