English and ESL + 57 years of reading everything

I'm an eccentric woman who likes the English language and can help you with its quirky ways. I had a wonderful education at Grinnell College, one of the best small liberal arts schools in the U.S. At Grinnell I learned that learning is lifelong, so I've been at it ever since, reading, working and teaching.

Friends' kids tell me I'm a good teacher, as do my ESL students. ESL students range from pre-literate to foreign university students studying in the U.S. and professionals preparing for the TOEFL exam. I pay attention to how each personally needs to be taught. I think most retained learning is self-discovered, so it's my job to get you to that point and turn you loose.

English

I majored in Philosophy with a minor in English at college and remain an avid reader today. I have an excellent grasp of English grammar and an appreciation of the energy and richness of the English language. I've taught basic and advanced ESL students and seen them through their TOEFL English Proficiency examination. I've also taught GED classes and seen my students pass their GED exams. I enjoy teaching and plan lessons to make them both relevant and interesting to students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I recently tutored two sisters in third and fourth grades who were new to the United States and to English, working with them until they were both doing Advanced Placement work. I enjoy working with children and always try to keep the student interested. I'm easy-going, patient and like to laugh with my student.

Grammar

Yes, I'm a grammarian. I love grammar. It's the code that makes sentences comprehensible and communication between people easier.

Phonics

I use phonics in my ESL classroom and am successful teaching people speaking a variety of languages the fundamentals of English sounds.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL to adults and young children for 12 years. I like to use 50's music to teach grammar, pronunciation and spelling. Idioms are important for ESL students and appear frequently in American music.

Proofreading

Proofreading is an art form that develops with writing. It's difficult to proof one's own written work, but give me somebody's else's writing and I'll find even the little errors. For example, on the FAQ page for Wyzant, the word 'encourage' is incorrectly spelled on both the Testing and the Written Request pages in the section Do I have to complete......

GED

I've taught GED and Pre-GED for North Harris College and have been successful in that my students passed the GED tests.

TOEFL

I've successfully tutored professionals from other countries who are taking the TOEFL test for their U.S. certifications.

Philosophy

My college major was Philosophy and I enjoyed it very much. It's the history of thinking and as such is a precursor to advanced studies in Psychology, Law, Medicine and other subjects.
