Before a career in the US Army defense organization TRADOC, I was a middle school and high school mathematics teacher and coach in Iowa for six years. I taught courses ranging from remedial math to algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. I also regularly applied upper level mathematics in my duties as an Operations Research Analyst in federal service. I adjust my style of tutoring to the needs and abilities of my students, much the same way as a coach develops a game plan according to the abilities of his players. The patience and understanding I exhibit has been demonstrated by the success my sons have attained, earning engineering degrees at Texas Tech University, and graduate level degrees at Johns Hopkins University. Tom has been our daughter's tutor for a few months now. He responded right away when we needed initial help and has worked with us to accommodate our ever-changing schedule. Tom is super-patient and really understands how to explain the Algebra process to a young teen in a way they will grasp the concepts. Thanks to Tom our daughter is back to being a great student and is feeling exceptionally confident- priceless for a parent.
Thank goodness for Tom!!!
Tom showed up ready to get down to business! He quickly assessed where she was having difficulty, and focused in on those areas. My daughter really liked his teaching style and that he was very patient. I am excited to see how the next tutoring sessions go, and to see the confidence in my child continue to build.
Tom is really a good tutor for my daughter and has not only helped her understand Algebra, but has encouraged her and given her confidence in her understanding. Her sessions with Tom have really eased her "math anxiety." The results are excellent - she has made "A's" in Algebra and is not afraid of math anymore. We are so happy we found Tom! He has been wonderful.
Takes his time. He can see where you are doing things incorrectly and shows you new ways to understand and work math problems.
If a retired math teacher cant get your kid caught up in school, I don't know who can. Tom has been great! He shows up on time ready to go to work. He knows his stuff and has even reviewed her material before the lesson. So far all really great stuff!
Tom has helped my daughter all semester with Algebra 1. He's been great! He's the kind of math teacher that kids like. He's readily available and flexible. If your kid needs help with Math, you should stop your search for a tutor right now and just contact Tom. He's everything you need. In fact, I'm a little apprehensive to let the Wyzant world know how great he is because I'm afraid he'll get booked up and wont have as much time for us. However, I feel for those kids who need help and really, you should look no further!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
