Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary teacher in Texas for grade levels PK - 8th grade. My certification is current. I have been a teacher for over 20 years. I taught all subjects in elementary grades PK - 5th. I have also taught 6th grade language arts, reading , and spelling. My 8th grade experience was teaching History, particularly Texas History.

I have extra endorsements in ESL (English as a Second Language), History, and Gifted and Talented for grades PK - 8.

ESL/ESOL

I completed a course of study for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the University of Puget Sound to receive my certification as an ESL teacher. I have worked with students from various language and ethnic backgrounds including: Korean, Spanish, Arabic, French, and German. My experience totals 6 years.

Needlework

I have been sewing since I was in high school, making clothes for my family. That was over 30 years ago. I learned to sew by taking classes.

I am also experienced in cross stitch and crewel embroidery. I am largely self-taught in this. I have lots of examples of my handiwork available for viewing. I started doing needlework in my later years of high school.

Phonics

As a certified teacher, I have had training in phonics and teaching reading. Phonics is very useful for students in learning to read. Phonemic awareness is crucial. Training and awareness of phonics can begin at early ages before the child enrolls in school.

Sewing

I began sewing clothing using patterns beginning in high school. That was over 30 years ago. I took classes in sewing and have continued honing my skills throughout adulthood.

Study Skills

I have taught a study skills class in summer school for my school district. I have counseled students and parents to help improve study habits at home.
