I have been working with kids and teaching most of my life. I had my first babysitting job when I was 11. I am a working artist and published poet. Last year I was interviewed by Maya Angelou for a radio program broadcast on the 4th of July. She is an amazing person to talk with. I have also met Duke Kahanamoku, Peter Max, Gwendolyn Brooks, LeRoi Jones, Kinky Friedman and Margaret Meade. None of them will remember me, but I remember them!

Last year I went to Kazakhstan and taught 8 year olds at an international school in Almaty. It was a wonderful experience. I lived in Japan and Hawaii when I was a kid.
My family did quite a bit of traveling.

I am interested in everything and enjoy reading, listening to live music, visiting libraries and museums.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. I also attended Eastern Illinois University and the University of Maryland-College Park( which was really at Yokota AFB in Tokyo, Japan). In 1992 I attended the Baylor Writing Project.

My teaching experience includes:
-16 years of 5th and 6th grade reading.
-about 16 years of adult ed(GED/ABE).
-Computer Lab.
-1st grade (2 years).
-3rd grade (1 year).
-6th and 7th grade English(1 year).
-4 year olds (1 year).
-6 weeks to 12 months (1 year).

I would describe my teaching style as holistic, global thinking, creative and exploratory. I have a strong science background to compliment my years of teaching language arts and reading.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th grades. I enjoy teaching students how to use their strengths to enhance their weaker areas. An example would be to show a good reader how to use their love of reading to understand math.

Children's literature has been a lifelong love for me. I can find a book to capture the interest of just about anyone. I enjoy learning about a student's interests and helping them to explore the world around them.

I spent the 2008-09 school year teaching in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Before leaving, I did not give much thought to being instantly illiterate. Not being able to read the signs or speak to anyone was an amazingly difficult experience. I had lived in Japan with my parents as a child, but read and spoke some Japanese. When I lived in Japan all the signs were in "Romanji" and hiragana... read more
