Are you interested in Photoshop? Do you want to learn what the pros know? Do you want to develop the precision in your retouching that will allow you to market and sell your work? If you would like to work on your own projects or have a specific agenda you need to learn quickly I can help? I am a working professional architectural photographer and I teach Photoshop to my clients on a regular basis.
Imagine yourself as a professional architectural photographer making a living with advanced and sometimes rather obscure knowledge of photography. Working in Photoshop doing complex masking to achieve precise color and contrast corrections while using advanced sharpening techniques to make detail stand out like never before. The entire process emulates your basic understanding in photography. The two naturally go together. Every image is retouched; many are multiple image compositions or HDRI. Knowing everything will be retouched influences the initial photography as a means to an end not the end in itself. This is the paradigm shift in photography in the last ten years.
I do this for a living.
Photoshop and the digital camera have replaced the photo lab. Now the photographer is responsible for it all. A photographer today must be proficient in the entire process.
Often the client requires an object removed or added to an image. In the elevated image of Costco on my website this image was combined from 4 separate photographs into a single panoramic view because the subject would not fit into the angle of view of the widest lenses and maintain correct perspective without distortion.
This process required massive perspective adjustments on multiple layers. The AT&T building was also removed from behind the Costco building as well as the construction cranes from an apartment complex being built out of site behind the development. . This becomes intricate work when the reflections of removed objects also have to be removed as well as any remaining views of the object seen through windows. Finally, to complete the image the sky has to be remade including clouds and sunset. All was planed before a single photograph was made. The camera was precisely placed to Juxtapose lines and objects in precise positions to allow for the best retouching possible.
Back to my website again, take a look in the portfolio of the Federal Reserve Branch Bank and notice the conference room. This room was photographed with a 4x5 view camera before digital photography was widely used for professional work. The room required three images to be merged together in a different way for different reasons than the Costco project.
The lighting in the upper vaulted ceiling was too bright. Normally we would simply find the switch and turn off the light during the exposure but the switching was computer controlled with no way to chance the presets. I determined the ceiling needed one exposure, the room would need a second exposure and thirdly the reflections on table top would be to bright when the room exposure was correct so I needed to expose that film before the light in the room was bright enough to make the room exposure. This was all decided in about two minutes before sunrise when we realized the lighting in the ceiling could not be controlled as we originally planed.
You have to love solving complex problems, sometimes very fast, to be good at photography.
After the film was tested and then processed, the frames with the correct exposure were scanned at 100 megs each and then the table top and ceiling were meticulously selected and copied then added to the scan with the correct room exposure to be manually blended.
All this would be difficult if not imposable to achieve with out a strong basic knowledge of photography acquired during study at Sam Houston State University and The University of Houston. I studied advanced color and black and white photography including over a years training in the zone system. I have knowledge of film that will be nearly completely lost in mainstream thought in less than a decade from now.
I can teach his material as well to anyone with an interest. Often I find that a good understanding of the basics, how a basic knowledge of photography can be applied to a specific persons interest in photography and the operating specifics of a students camera can be the best place to start. Individual one-on-one training is the perfect setting for this process to take place in.
Many times I hire assistants with very little to no formal training and I find that if their interest is genuine they learn quickly and they apply the knowledge in ways that truly make you and I appreciate ones creativity.
Seeing young people apply successfully what they learn is a wonderful reward.
