Retired Exec. Director of Art Museums and Galleries Teaches Again!

After receiving my BFA in Art with focus in photography, I moved to France. While there, I taught ESL to professionals and eventually taught darkroom photography IN FRENCH! Quite a challenge. Back in the states, I worked at the MFA in Houston, became Director of Lawndale Art & Performance Center, moved to El Paso to become Executive Director of the Bridge Center for Contemporary Art. I planned & presented art exhibits and many performances and literary events.

After 6 years at the Bridge Center, I moved to LA to get a Master's degree in Professional Writing. That means I write nonfiction, including grant applications, articles for magazines, white papers, essays, PR materials, etc. In LA, I became certified (CBEST certification) to teach ESL in the Los Angeles Ind. School System in the adult education division. I loved teaching adults in France and in the U.S. I have helped some students to reduce their accent so they can be better understood. While living in France, I learned how important it was for me to get rid of my Texas accent, so the French could understand me!

In 2000, I received my Master's degree and became the curator of the art gallery at Long Beach City College. I also taught photography, art history, and art appreciation.

During most of my career as the Executive Director of nonprofit arts galleries and museums, I have written grants, articles, press releases, written and given speeches, made PowerPoint presentations, created budgets, and multi-tasked my way through 25 happy years getting to travel to France, Spain, Italy, and Germany--also to many fabulous remote culturally important villages & archeologically significant places in Mexico (although I don't speak Spanish). I've lived and worked in California, Wisconsin, Montana, and New York. Now I am back in Texas--my home state. I hope that I can help you find academic success. Then we will both be happy.

Vocabulary

I have a Master's degree in Professional Writing. To receive this degree, I took a semester's course in Editing. Editing is a broad term that includes proof-reading. It is difficult, but usually essential, to be able to proof-read and edit your own work. I can give you some skills that will help you read your own work as if it was someone else's writing.

Grammar

Learning correct English grammar can be very hard. English is full of 'exceptions to the rule' and odd constructions that go back centuries. But there is a structure. It can be learned, and I can help you to understand how English grammar works so that your writing and speaking will show how intelligent you are.

Reading

I love to read and my day is full of reading, emails, newspapers, labels, directions, recipes, instructions. Most of us HAVE to learn to read and understand what we have read. But I have a grandson who is dyslexic. I have another grandson who loves to play sports. I know that reading and understanding what you have read is not easy for some and boring for others. I can work with you to improve your retention of what you have read. And I hope I can help you to learn to love to read as I do!

Writing

I have a Master's degree if Professional Writing from University of Southern California. Professional Writing covers writing fiction, as in novels, screen plays, and short stories, and nonfiction. Nonfiction covers biographies, memoirs, grant-writing, technical writing, and even poetry. We usually use nonfiction writing everyday, whether we text or tweet someone or work on a thesis. ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL in the Adult Education program of the Los Angeles School System. I received a CBEST certification there. When I lived in France I taught ESL to adult & high school students as private lessons. I love teaching ESL. I also can teach accent reduction, which I find is needed by many intelligent non-native speakers, whose accent makes it difficult to be understood. Do you want to understand your parents? Can you figure out why your best friend is so alike and yet so different from yourself? Studying psychology will help you figure out everyone around you AND yourself. It's worth spending the time to learn this subject because you will use it every day the rest of your life. I'll be glad to turn you on to the study of psychology because I find it fascinating and I know that it will be important to you, as it has been important for me.

Physiology

Learning what the body is, and understanding the way the body works is what Physiology is all about. This is important to you because you exist inside a body. It's complex and it's so simple. It's so organized in there. I'll help you remember what you need to know and you'll find it's all really interesting.

Literature

If you are a mathematician, engineer, physicist, or have difficulties understanding English language, appreciating literature can be difficult. You can even think it is a big waste of time. However, if I can help you to find the right books to start reading, you can find yourself transported to another world or to understanding how another person feels and thinks. How important is that? Proofreading

GED

I have particular strengths in understanding the use of English. That is also true with spelling, grammar, writing composition, and other areas related to the use of language. I am sure that I can help with someone needing to learn history, political science, and several science subjects. I cannot be very helpful with math.

SAT Reading

Developing Reading skills usually means one needs to develop their vocabulary or needs to gain a better understanding of how to get information from a sentence and a paragraph. Breaking these components down into "bits" of information is the trick.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have done substitute teaching in the elementary grades and I have worked with all of my five grandchildren to assist them with learning to read, spell, creative writing, and comprehension. Children absorb skills so rapidly, particularly if they are given that valuable one-on-one attention to help them stay focused on the goal!

Phonics

I attended school in the era when learning to spell was taught phonetically. It has been invaluable in my life. I also learned to "guess" at the meaning of words based on its Latin root, or what its meaning seemed like. That has assisted me greatly with comprehension and also with learning foreign languages. My BFA from University of Houston is in Photography. I was very successful at darkroom work and even created 3 darkrooms for myself. I developed film and printed my own pictures (both black & white & color). Now I use only a digital camera and I write two blogs. My interest now is in exploring nature--both flora & fauna. Public Speaking

I took Speech and Drama in high school, and was an active participant in the National Forensics League (Debating teams) and the Thespians Society (drama). I went to many speech tournaments and frequently won a ribbon in Solo and Duet Acting, plus won roles in plays in high school and college.
