I have worked with students of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. I have mostly taught ESL and GED classes to adults, but have tutored in these subjects to elementary, junior high and high school students. I have also tutored high school students in preparing to take the TAKS and the SAT. The majority of my students have passed the test they were preparing for on the first try.
I also have some experience in art and music. I can read music and understand theory, however am pretty much tone deaf. I have participated in several artistic endeavors and have knowledge of many types of art processes. I enjoy painting when I have the time.
When tutoring, I work with students and their teachers to help students master the skills needed. I may present the material in a different way than the teacher. I believe that not all students learn the same way and presenting the material in a variety of ways will help them grasp the information they need to succeed. I also believe that practice of anything we do will improve our skills, from reading and math facts, to painting and playing an instrument. I believe that tutoring is a chance to practice, but individual practice must occur also and parents must oversee this process.
I believe that for school age children, the learning process is a cooperative that includes the teacher (and tutor, if used), the parents and the child. They each have a particular position, or job, to do if the student is to succeed. When all work together, toward the same goal, success will follow. I believe that success for each student may be different. We do not all have the same abilities, likes, or desires. We must work within our given boundaries to meet the task at hand.
