Learning is the most central part of my life, and I am always keen to help others accomplish learning as well. I provide tutoring in languages and math.

I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in Linguistics, and I tutor in all areas of English, from SAT/ACT reading and writing to grammar and proofreading. I am fluent in French, having taken several years of classes, and recently spending an immersive year in France playing baseball. And I tutor in Latin, with a minor in Classics and several years of Latin courses.

I also tutor in math. I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics exams and a 780 on the SAT math section, and I can tutor any level of high school math, including algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trigonometry, and precalculus, as well as SAT/ACT math.

As a college and professional baseball player, I understand the difference between the process and result. In the classroom, just as on the baseball field, it is crucial to focus on the process, on learning a subject thoroughly, rather than on the result, like a test score. Yes, the test is important, but it is the learning that precedes it that leads to great test scores. I found the most success learning the subject, not just the test, and I teach in the same way. I also understand that everybody learns differently, and I do my best to accommodate the individual strengths of the student, always encouraging awareness of one's own learning strengths in the process.

I know I can help you learn and accomplish your goals, and I would love to make it happen!

ACT English

I can help you improve your test scores! All you need is practice, a good strategy, and confidence. I can help provide all three.

In high school, I worked my butt off preparing for standardized tests, and I was rewarded with good scores. I scored a 35 on the ACT, a 760 on SAT Reading, a 780 on SAT Writing, and a 5 on the AP Literature and AP Language exams. In college, I was a Linguistics major, with a Classics minor that included learning Latin. I spent a lot of time as a tutor in high school and college, mostly helping my teammates in any classes they struggled with.

ACT Math

In high school, I scored a 35 on the ACT, a 760 on SAT Math, and a 5 on the AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics exams. In college, I used math on the baseball field, not only as part of the game, but also as a tutor for my teammates in their college math classes.

French

I took five years of French in grade school, from age 11-16, excelling at every level, as well as high school and college Latin and college Italian. I worked in college as a research assistant for a history professors digging through 1920s French newspapers, which sharpened my understanding of colloquial French. And most recently I spent the majority of 2012 in Rouen, France, playing semi-professional baseball and immersing myself in French language and culture. From all these experiences, I have a great understanding of the technical, classroom, grammar-based side of learning French, as well as the real-world, comprehension and communication side.

Latin

I have studied Latin since 2005, with two formal years of study in high school and two more in college, as well as significant time studying on my own since then. My degree is in linguistics, and I specialize in historical linguistics, i.e. how languages change and interact over time. I use my knowledge of English, French, Italian, and Aramaic to inform my knowledge of Latin. To me, the real pleasure of studying Latin is connecting it to the modern world and modern languages, and I try to help my students make the same connections among whichever languages they already know, both for mnemonics and for simple curiosity.

Thank you Chris! We couldn't be happier with Chris and are grateful that he replied to our posting so quickly. We had others reply too but he seemed to immediately know that we were looking for more than just a math tutor. We wanted my daughter to prepare properly for SAT testing and he delivered. Chris came in two weeks before my daughter's SAT test. He maximized study time by preparing study materials and ho ...
