Hello!
I am Ms. Wilson and love both Math and English and find great joy in observing the world with my senses, exploring the world through the intellect and describing it through art and poetry. Life fills me with wonder and overflowing joy. I have a desire to share this joy through tutoring.
Philosophy
I believe that every human individual can do math. Math is something which is discovered, which the brain can naturally grasp and come to understand. At times it may seem the Math is a big scary monster or a thousand foot wall impossible to get over or knock through. But those descriptions do not describe the true image of Math. Math is something like clay. It is used to describe the amount of something which then can be molded into beautiful landscapes, incredible structures, and worlds yet to be discovered. But just as clay has to be worked, massaged and carved, so to does the subject of Math, before it is mastered. But as hands were made to work with clay, so are our minds made to understand and know math. Our minds were made to Reason and Math is the foundation of reasoning.
I have struggled with English and writing, myself in the past, but have successfully graduated from the University of Dallas with a Bachelor’s degree in English. I have found that to write is to express the self, and that the self is very mysterious but also incredibly beautiful. It takes courage to write, but who doesn't want to be courageous? Language itself is an Art, it structures space and time, distinguishes and connects, and can paint a picture in precise detail. Words have meaning, just as every stroke, and every color counts in a beautiful picture.
It is important to develop a relationship with the student to create a comfortable learning atmosphere. Anxiety is a huge block to learning. I know this from experience. I will sit down with a student and get to know them and come to understand their struggle and perspective. From there, I find a way in which they can understand the subject and know it such that they can teach it themselves, rather than just memorize material for a test.
Experience
I have always had a love for teaching and tutoring. I taught beginning ballet to children ages 3-7 for a year my last year of high school, and taught a third grader beginning-intermediate piano lessons for two summers of my first two years of college. I have also successfully tutored a high-schooler in Advanced Mathematics and an adult student in college algebra. I have worked at Kumon Learning Center where I have helped children write small stories and poems, and have helped them understand math concepts.
Education
I was homeschooled since second grade all the way through high school and graduated from the University of Dallas in May of 2012.
I look forward to working with you, and hope your child or yourself find the help you need. May you grow in your Love for learning.
