As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for..." With me, you are getting four decades - that's forty years - of tutoring experience from a Certified Secondary Math teacher with classroom experience.
However, I don't tutor like a classroom teacher. I am very personable and engage my students in interesting ways. I am excited about what I teach and my excitement is contagious. Since I took several courses in psychology as well as in math and science, I have a real interest in how people learn. As such, I am able to help my students build the necessary bridges from where they are to where they need to go academically. Since joining WyzAnt late last year I have clocked over 200 hours of tutoring with a rating of 4.78 out of 5. This demonstrates my success with my students.
I have tutored students from elementary school to graduate school in a variety subjects. While studying Math, Science and Psychology at Davidson College, I began tutoring elementary level children. Later, while a graduate student studying Psychology and Mathematics at Duke University, I began tutoring undergraduates needing help with Math. The caliber of my tutoring with other students earned me a position on the team that tutored student athletes. Also, I tutored students in the Duke MBA program who needed help with courses in Advanced Algebra and Calculus.
Later, my wife and I decided to educate our children at home. We started with Kindergarten and continued through high school. I assisted them with a variety of subjects over the years as well as with Math. This gave me experience with teaching all age levels and in a variety of subjects.
As a certified Secondary Math Teacher in Texas, I taught Algebra, Geometry, Math Models and Algebra II in the Irving ISD. In that capacity, I worked with students who had a wide range of abilities in math, both the math-challenged and the proficient. Many of my students also struggled with learning disabilities. This gave me considerable experience with assisting those with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia and other challenges. In addition, I worked extensively with students to improve their testing strategies to help prepare them for the TAKS test, the ACT and the SAT. I am proficient in the WyzAnt system in the GED; ACT English, Math, Reading and Science; and, SAT Math, Reading, and Writing.
Although most of my work in teaching and tutoring has been in Math and Science, I have a broad educational background with interests in history, English literature, languages and the social sciences. My specialties include my ability to communicate in terms that are easily understood by the person with whom I am working. I work well with people of all ages, am patient and have an aptitude for explaining complex concepts in everyday language. I live in Irving and am currently available with flexible hours.
