Let's Read Radically and Discover Purpose

I am a graduate of Texas A&M Commerce, with a BA in English and a MED in Special Education. During my internship, I taught resource reading and remedial math. While completing graduate school I worked as a teacher’s aide assisting with Biology, History, and Math subjects. I have completed more than 26 hours of Elementary Education courses. I also assisted in teaching and planning for the Life Skills class. This class included students with autism and visual impairments. This class, for me, was the most challenging and enjoyable for me. I had the pleasure of successfully teaching one of the autistic students how to read using the Edmark Reading Program in an eight-week period.

As a new teacher, I have found that teaching is a process that occurs to form and facilitate an atmosphere of understanding and applying new information. Before I could begin the formation and facilitating of an environment worthy of learning, I set my mind on one principle that is the foundation of my teaching belief. That principle is that every student is capable of learning. Their capability will be nurtured and driven by my willingness to use every strategy possible to make the subject easily accessible, applicable and enjoyable. I am more than equipped to help with your learning needs.

Reading

Phonics is the foundation of words and words are the foundation of reading. At the core of phonics students are able to notice, differentiate, and manipulate sounds — from sounds of words to sounds of individual phonemes. Phonemes are the smallest units of sounds in a word. Students will learn consonant, short vowels, word families and blends to name a few.

Literature

As an English major I studied Multi-Ethnic American Literature, Children's Literature, African-American Literature, Adolescent Literature and American Novels After WWI. During my studies I analyzed the work of authors such as Julia Alvarez, F. Scott Fitzgerald and W.E.B Dubois. Much of my analytical skills was built through discussion, writing and defining the difficult portions of texts. Each of these skills can be fostered through time spent reading various works.

SAT Reading

Reading Comprehension (also known as Critical Reading) questions test your ability to understand a passage and answer questions on the basis of what is stated and implied in the passage. Identifying the main idea of the passage and appreciate features such as the author's tone and attitude as well as the organization of the passage is the goal and strategy used in tutoring.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 36 undergraduate and graduate hours in elementary education including reading, math, special education and science. I implement many strategies that help students better understand the benchmarks required in each grade level. Study Skills

As a notetaker for disability services as an undergrad, I learned that notetaking was almost an art. It requires knowledge of shorthand and identifying what's important. As someone with dyslexia, I have perfected scanning, skim and annotation as a part of reading. These are only a few things, of many, I know about study skills. I will tailor a plan from environment setting to strategy for your study needs.

Special Needs

As a graduate student of Special Education, I was educated about disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, Aspergers and Downs Syndrome. As a teacher's aide during my graduate studies, I assisted and taught students with blindness, autism and deafness. I was able to use various strategies to help these students read and prepare for the state standard exam.

Autism

I currently work in a Life Skills classroom that consist of 12 student, 7 are autistic. I am well aware of their behavioral tendencies, need for consistency and patterns as well as sensitivities to some sounds, touch, and specific stimuli. A very structured, focused, motivation driven and visual oriented plan is needed for students with autism.
