Hello! My name is Isaac, and I am recently graduated from Southern Methodist University. I tutored for over 2 years, both at SMU and at a private learning center, and I look forward to working with you! My philosophy on education is simple: learning is not merely a list of facts which one must memorize, but an essential and dynamic aspect of human beings. The ability to receive ideas, think critically about those ideas, and express one's own thoughts clearly either verbally or in writing is crucial to functioning in the world, no matter one's profession or career. In short, education is a about learning HOW to learn, and I am passionate about helping others to acquire this life skill.

I earned my BA in Philosophy at SMU, and, along with courses in my major, have taken quite a few English classes as well. Reading, comprehension, critical thinking, and writing are my specialty areas, and I have taught them for two years now. I have tutored children as young as five years old to prepare them for kindergarten all the way up to college students needing to improve their writing techniques and critical thinking skills.

I have played guitar for 9 years now and have a full knowledge of the techniques used on the instrument, as well as a basic working knowledge of music theory.

I also played football for six years from 7th to 12th grade and know the game, as well as exercises for improving techniques for ANY position, from quarterback to defensive line. In addition, I have a basic knowledge of Judo, Jui-Jitsu, and freestyle wrestling which I will be happy to impart.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In high school, I received a perfect score on the English section of the ACT. Since then, I have taken several English courses and written countless essays in college. Grammar, vocabulary, and sentence/paragraph structure are areas in which I am particularly knowledgeable.

Elementary (K-6th)

I was a clinician for Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes for two years, and while the programs there are designed for all ages (5-adults), most of our students are grades 1-8. I have spent more than 500 hours teaching elementary age children reading, comprehension, and math. In addition, my work with students at the learning center was conducted in one-on-one sessions, so the methods I used transfer over well to tutoring.

To aid in reading, students are taught to visualize a letter as they hear/say the letter's corresponding sound. Once basic phonics become automatic for the student, he/she progresses to syllables and words, with particular emphasis on decoding and sight words (for words that break the rules of phonics).

For comprehension, students are helped to make "movies" in their mind of what they read. Initially, students may not have the vocabulary necessary to construct such visualizations. In such cases, establishing pictures for a basic working vocabulary is the first step.

I also tutored math during my time there. My primary method includes making basic operations accessible and concrete. I am proficient up to basic algebra.

What is important to keep students interested and engaged is some sort of reward system. This, of course, will be specific to the student, but it is vital to keep him/her motivated to learn when it is difficult to do so.

Elementary Math

I was a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes from June 2010 until May 2012, and during that time I taught both reading and elementary math. My methods include fun ways to make basic mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, etc.), fractions, decimals, and word problems concrete and accessible. My philosophy with elementary education is that all children can learn these things, if somebody takes the time to make it accessible to them and their particular learning style.

Football

I played football from 7-12th grade in such positions as runningback, wide receiver, linebacker, defensive end, cornerback, and even defensive tackle. In those six years of playing, I learned methods for developing defensive skills such as tackling, shedding blockers, fitting on the defensive line, and coverage techniques. I also learned how to enhance offensive skills such as passing, blocking, carrying, catching. In addition, I learned countless drills for developing strength and agility, which are essential to all positions. As a coach, I believe in participating in such drills along with players, to provide encouragement and example.

Guitar

I have played guitar for nine years now. In that time, I have acquired a working knowledge of virtually all technical skills involved in the rock/folk tradition of the instrument, including chords, arpeggios, hammer ons, pull offs, basic sweep picking, alternate picking, string skipping, and much more. I am also knowledgeable in basic classical techniques such as finger picking.

In addition, I have an intermediate knowledge of music theory, including such skills as reading music, contriving chord and rhythm progressions, and teaching scales and intervals.

Finally, I am adept at instrument care such as changing strings and pickups, setting intonation, neck adjustments for optimal action, etc.

Reading

I was a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes from June 2010 until May 2012, and during that time I taught both reading and elementary math. I also taught students with dyslexia and various other learning disabilities. My methods include fun ways to help students visualize the symbols of language (letters and words) and link them with their correlating sounds. My philosophy with education is that almost anybody can learn to read well, if somebody takes the time to make it accessible to them and their particular learning style.

Writing

I have tutored writing professionally for over two years now, both at Southern Methodist University and Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. During that time, I worked with students from the age of five up to as old as thirty. Proofreading, grammatical instruction, organizing ideas, and condensing content are just a few of the ways I can help you with your writing. However, I won't simply do those things for you and "fix" your writing, but teach you those skills so you're able to write well on your own!
