I am doing final edits to my PhD dissertation and will submit it to the committee for final approval in the next few weeks.
For the past 10 years, I have taught all levels of developmental writing
to community college students who want to improve their writing skills or want to pass the TSI exam. More than 90% of my students pass the EOC and enroll in credit English
classes. As a tutor, I have helped students receive higher scores on ACT
, and CLEP exams. For two years, I also taught Composition I and speech
at a private medical college.
In addition, I taught English III & IV, reading
, creative writing, speech, and literary genre to students at risk at a alternative high school for six years. More than 84% of my students passed the TAKS
exit level exams. My experience also includes prepping 6th-grade students for the STAAR reading exam.
As a writer, I published more than 300 of my freelance or staff newspaper articles. In addition, I have written more than 50 technical manuals for a circuit board equipment manufacturer, a hardware student manual for a for-profit university, a historical information book about a town's pioneer community, and a tour book of free one day recreational spots. Other credits include being a co-writer of a festival guide.
My teaching philosophy
is that every student can learn. However, all students do not learn at the same pace or at the same knowledge level. Students need to start at their knowledge levels and build new information from there. I implement cultural diversed learning techniques to incorporate the student's background and learning style into learning. In that respect, students not only feel more comfortable learning, but learning becomes relevant because their personal interests become part of education.
