I believe that each child is a rare blessing that holds every potential. As teachers, parents, and developers of these children, it is our responsibility to ensure that these wonderful lives that we have been entrusted to grow, have every opportunity to succeed. I practice the techniques from "Teach Like a Champion" by Doug Lemov and his more recent book, "Practice Perfect." These are techniques that focus more on the effort than the result. In "Teach Like a Champion," Lemov explains that the effort must be rewarded in order for the student to continue to strive for ever better results. In "Practice Perfect," he explains the importance practicing the right things correctly as apposed to simply practicing and becoming great at doing something the wrong way. Combining these techniques is tremendously powerful.
I teach seventh grade Science at an HISD middle school. These are underprivileged children that face challenges that many adults would find unbearable. Learning can be a safe zone for these and many children facing all kinds of issues. Positive re-enforcement and guidance are the staples that make a child a successful adult.
