I am a former college professor (Ph.D., Psychology), businessman and researcher on computer-based training and performance tools. I have taught statistics, experimental design, technical writing and various subjects and levels in college psychology, including introduction, personality theory, research methods and psychological measurement (i.e. testing). My specialty is statistics, and in addition to teaching I have served as a statistics consultant on technical publications in areas including psychology, chemistry and medicine. I also teach algebra and geometry, since I believe that a strong foundation in the basics is essential for success in all technical fields. Once the basics are mastered, the rest is straightforward. My teaching approach is both intuitive and technical, and I use real world examples whose characteristics we all already know, so we each bring a lot of prior knowledge to solving the problems.
I have published a number of articles in academic journals, and can teach you how to write in journal-article format (and also improve your overall writing skill). For those whose work requires writing competitive proposals and grant applications, I have written winning proposals and successfully managed programs totaling over $60M. A real advantage in learning mathematics is that all of your knowledge carries forward. The skills you learn early will be used in all of your future mathematics courses. So once you learn the basics, you will build on them as you progress. The first skill is algebra. The concepts (e.g., variables and inequality) and manipulations (e.g., solving equations and factoring) you learn in algebra are a kind of language that will be used in geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry, calculus, probability and statistics. These subjects use the same notations as do algebra, so once you master them you can move forward into more advanced topics.
Algebra is not necessarily easy, but it is completely logical. There is nothing you learn early that will be contradicted by later lessons. My approach in working with you on algebra 1 and algebra 2 is first to assess your familiarity and comfort with basic concepts, and explain and clarify the ones you need some improvement on; and then to work on the specific areas of your assignments, such as solving equations with radicals or graphing functions. I can almost guarantee that you will have “Aha! So that’s how it works!” moments as algebra becomes more familiar and understandable.
Algebra 2 builds on the foundation of algebra 1, especially in the ongoing application of the basic concepts of variables, solving equations, and manipulations such as factoring. My approach in working with you on algebra 2 is first to assess your familiarity and comfort with basic concepts, and explain and clarify the ones where you need some improvement; and then to work on the specific areas of your assignments, such as solving equations with radicals, exponents and logarithms, evaluating and simplifying complex polynomials, graphing and solving complex functions, and imaginary numbers. Your understanding and familiarity with Algebra 2 will increase, and you will be more confident that you can solve most problems you will encounter.
I have been a college professor teaching statistics to both undergraduates and graduates, and have tutored statistics through WyzAnt since 2012. I am especially proficient in the statistics used in biostatistics applications, which are used in most health-care courses of study and research. These techniques include those used, for example, to determine the effectiveness of medication, or in epidemiological studies of disease transmission or causes of death. The statistics used are standard means comparisons, but also analysis of variance and especially multivariate regression and correlation - and I have used and taught all of these.

Some of the techniques I use are: 1) completing a survey on study skills to determine a baseline; 2) completing a detailed, week-long log of study (time, place, subject, distractions) 3) choosing an appropriate place and time for study; 4) developing a protocol for improving important study skills; and 5) setting small, achievable goals so the student sees progress. I have found that this procedure helps the motivated student approach learning more confidently, and it usually leads to better grades and more satisfaction and enjoyment of learning.
