Hi everyone! My name is Vy, pronounced like Vee. I recently moved from Dallas to Houston, TX and am excited to be here. I have my degree in counseling psychology and pursuing another in occupational therapy. The last several years, I have been a Master Trainer with Learning RX and a Reading Interventionist for the Dallas Independent School District through the great program of Reading Partners. I also did my counseling internship at Allen High School, DISD schools, and the SMU Center for Family Counseling. I have been lucky that my career has given me the opportunity to work with students from kindergarten all the way to the graduate level.

Through my work and training, I have gain experience with students who have learning disabilities, cognitive delays, academic hardships, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, and varying levels of motivation. My tutoring method starts with a conversation with parents AND students to figure out and strategize goals. Afterwards, I provide help and encouragement while learning past material that were not mastered or completely new material to prepare for the future. I also focus on skill strengthening and study skills to build confidence in your own ability.

I can't wait to get started in aiding you or your kiddos in implementing goals for success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As I completed my Masters in counseling psychology, I completed my internship at The SMU Center for Family Counseling, Allen Independent School District, and the Amelia Flores Youth and Family Center where I counseled and gave guidance in career and college counseling to high school through graduate level students. Clients and I discussed career development and preparation, opportunities, college preparation and planning.

Dyslexia

In the past, I worked at a cognitive training facility that gave me the opportunity to work with students with Dyslexia. We focused on phonics, phonemes, spelling, auditory processing, reading, and games that focused on rhyming, alliteration, and sounding out words. I was also able to continue working with students with Dyslexia in the Dallas Independent School District as a Reading Interventionist through the Reading Partners Program. At DISD, I modeled reading, had students read to me, worked on spelling and grammar, focused on sounding out, and played word games. I encouraged students and tried to instill confidence in reading as it is in all subjects and a part of everyday life.

Phonics

While working for Reading Partners and Learning RX, I gained valuable experience teaching phonics. I taught phonics to age groups ranging from 5 years old to adults. Teaching phonics is necessary is teaching students to blend, read, and sound out on their own.

Special Needs

I previously worked as a Training Manager and Master Trainer for a company called Learning RX. I worked with students with ADD/ADHD, academic difficulties, cognitive delays, behavior concerns, low motivation, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and Autism spectrum populations for 5 years. I also worked for Reading Partners as a Reading Interventionist for the Dallas Independent School District where I met with students with with varying needs such as dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, and learning delays. I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology and am currently in school to get another Masters in occupational therapy.

STAAR

In the last few years I have worked or interned in the Dallas Independent School District as a counselor or Reading Interventionist. In these positions, I have helped prepare students for STAAR testing by aiding lessons in reading and math, provide test taking strategies, and strengthening skills to prepare students for the STAAR test. I also assisted a test taking anxiety group for students who had failed the STARR test at Allen High School.

Study Skills

In the last 5 years I have worked with Learning RX and as a private tutor in Dallas where I focused in teaching study skills that ranged from strengthening broad skill sets such as attention, memory, or processing speed to focusing in on one subject. I taught methods in studying, processing school lessons, relaxation for test taking anxiety, and even healthy eating.
