I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in English Literature, then went on to receive my Master's in Business Administration. I attended Westbury Christian Academy to complete certification in 4-8 English Language Arts. I also have six years of teaching experience. While teaching in Fortbend and Houston independent school district, I learned how to work with children from all different backgrounds. From kindergarten to high school, from disabled/special ed to those who went on to become valedictorians, as well as English language learners. I have experienced all levels. Six years of experience showed me how to manage a class, tailor lesson plans for specific children. Children learn better when they are given love and encouragement. I'm always reminded that my list of credentials, experience, and well crafted resume mean nothing to a child because they remember you most for how you made them feel.
My approach to tutoring is to first get to know/understand my student, who they are, their background, what are their interests, all of this combined helps me to understand how they may learn/process information. Other strategies that help are to have them read aloud to me at first, this helps in understanding their proficiency in English. Sometimes I'll have them write about something of their interest or experiences they've had. This allows me to both understand them and also know where they need help in tutoring. I would have them show me an assignment they're working on or having trouble with and make suggestions on better ways to go about completing the assignment but in the end I allow them to make their own decisions and utilize their own judgement. I also tailor my approach to each child and also to an extent, I tailor it to the particular teacher they're submitting the work for. Since the student best understands the teachers areas of focus that their teacher, I would ask them what does their teacher normally focus on/look for in their writing/reading and what has the teacher normally pointed out to them about their grammar/writing. In order to help, I will ask them what their teacher been focusing on in the classroom in general. Often I even make up games for them to play that are geared towards areas they need improvement in and areas of interest to them as well because I realize after certain hours children need a break from the conventional academic rigmarole.
