I am a former French teacher with over twenty years of experience teaching French and English grammar. Every student learns differently. Therefore, I believe lessons should be tailored to meet individual learning styles. In addition to giving students the information they need to make informed choices about the subject matter they are learning, I also find it helpful to question them in order to challenge them to find answers on their own, as well as to test their comprehension. This can be frustrating at times - and part of my job is to keep this from becoming too frustrating - but the rewards are immense as students arrive at answers on their own. This is when true, authentic learning takes place.

If you are coming to me for help with your French, you may find that we spend a significant amount of time on English grammar. That is because it is important to understand the mechanics of your own language (English) in order to effectively transfer that knowledge to another language such as French. But don't worry! We will spend plenty of time on your French, too! Just don't get discouraged when we review your English as a prelude to your study of French.

If you are coming to me to improve your English or writing skills, my years of foreign language teaching have prepared me very well for assisting you in those endeavors, as well. Additionally, I am an avid writer, myself. I maintain my own blog and am working on a collection of short stories and novellas.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As a foreign language teacher of over twenty years, I had to teach English language concepts in order to ensure that my students were able to learn their equivalents in the target language (French).

French

I have over twenty years of experience teaching French.

Grammar

I taught both English and French grammar throughout my 20+ year career as a high school French teacher.

Proofreading

Being proficient in and having taught both English and French grammar, I am well equipped to help my students through the sometimes confusing rules of English grammar, and to help them to identify mistakes and learn how to correct them.

Reading

I have always been an avid reader, and I can use the skills I have developed over the years to help students be better readers themselves.

Study Skills

As a teacher for over twenty years, I have a lot of experience helping students improve their study skills. I first ask them to show me what they're doing to prepare for a subject. Then I make suggestions as to how they might make improvements such as better note-taking skills or the use of index cards to help organize information.

Vocabulary

As an avid reader, I have picked up a lot of vocabulary along the way. My studies in French have added to this since well over half of English words are of French origin.

Writing

For the past year and a half, I have maintained my own blog. I am also pursuing a series of short stories and novellas.

When missing school for any reason (personal illness, sporting event, family emergency), make sure you meet with all your teachers as soon as you return to school to find out what you missed.  This will keep you from earning reduced or no credit on your assignments.  It will also help you keep up with any material you'll need to know for that next quiz or test.

In order to avoid last-minute rushes in the morning at the beginning of a busy school day, consider prepping as much as possible the evening before.  Pack all the materials you'll need into your backpack, pack your lunch and put it in the refrigerator so you can grab it and go, even decide what you'll wear the next day.  You'll find your mornings will go much more smoothy with a little... read more
