I earned an Engineering degree (with High Honors!) about 37 years ago, but my love for film and video and photography drove me into a career using those skills. By directing and shooting training videos, I've learned a thing or two about teaching: keep it simple, keep it direct, and present the information in a way that the "audience" will understand and remember!
Of course, to earn my degree, I had to spend many hours with math and science courses. But, more than just remembering the details, I remember HOW I learned those subjects, and I can pass those techniques along to others. Even though English classes were not emphasized in my college work, I had a solid background in high school, and writing and editing scripts has kept my grammar skills sharpened. I learned Spanish by speaking it in Chile over a dozen or so visits, and through working to translate and dub (or subtitle) videos on various subjects through the years. The photo, film and video knowledge I have all come from years of direct experience; I've been around the world several times, shooting for several of the largest energy companies.
If you’re struggling to understand a subject, just remember: if someone else can learn it, you can, too. Part of learning is having the confidence that you CAN learn it. Let’s get started!
I have studied and worked as a photographer for over 40 years. I began with 35mm film and had my own darkroom at age 12. I now use DSLR's and PhotoShop, but the skills are very much the same. I worked for my high school yearbook, college newspaper, and now for corporate clients, documenting large construction projects and community service initiatives.
After completing AP math classes in high school, I completed Calculus courses in my engineering curriculum at N.C. State University, where I graduated with high honors. I've always been able to explain simply and succinctly the basic concepts of math and science to others, no matter what their age! I'm a very visual learner, and I believe others are as well, so I'm prepared to use plenty of visual aids to get across concepts which may be difficult to grasp.
I studied Spanish from the 7th grade until the 10th grade, and was fascinated by it. It felt like I was learning a secret code that could only be understood by others who knew the secret code.
Years later, I met and married a girl from Chile. Meeting her family in Chile for the first time was an experience! My Spanish grew in leaps and bounds as we returned to Chile for many visits through the 22 years we were married. During that time, we worked from time to time translating scripts for educational or promotional videos into Spanish (my main work was creating these videos in English). That was a great learning experience!
So, I'm a gringo with a love for (correctly spoken!) Spanish. I hope to pass that love on to you or your children! With a great start, you or they can spend a lifetime learning more and more!
I was "bitten by the film bug" at the age of 9, and started shooting short dramas with a spring-wound 8mm film camera. Fifty years later, I'm shooting with HD broadcast cameras and editing on Avid and Final Cut software. I've been around the world several times, shooting for major energy companies and once for American Idol. I've produced, cast, location scouted, directed, lit, shot, and edited film and video through my varied career. Recently, I taught video production and post production part-time for the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, at their facility here in Houston.
