I have taught ESOL and English for over 20 years in university and community college settings in the Houston area, and I have tutored students of many different backgrounds. I have also written ESOL grammar and writing textbooks for Oxford University Press and Pearson which are used widely all over the world. I have been a full-time ESOL instructor at a community college in the Houston area for the past 14 years. Before that, I taught ESL and English at the University of Houston for 10 years. I first learned English as a Second Language in middle school, and I became very good at it, so in high school I started tutoring my friends and relatives in English. I loved teaching English to others so much that I decided to major in applied English linguistics (or TESOL) in college. I received my bachelor's and master's in applied English linguistics from the University of Houston and went on to obtain my doctoral degree in second language acquisition from the same university. Learning English as a Second Language has helped me understand the challenges that ESL students face. It has also enabled me to teach the language in a way that is easy for students to understand. My students always compliment me on my ability to explain the English grammar in a way that makes it easy to understand and use. They also tell me that I am very good at breaking down the steps involved in writing and in explaining difficult vocabulary. I believe that teaching and learning should be fun and interesting. I start with a free consultation session with my new students, so I can find out about their needs and goals.
