I am young educator with a B.A. in English and a TEFL certification. Until recently, I’d been teaching abroad. For a little over four years, when I wasn’t standing in front of a classroom or fine tuning my lesson plans, I spent my time perfecting my Spanish by diving into the world of Spanish literature and by playing at understanding the complexities of traveling youth, like myself, through the art of creative writing. I must admit that I have more questions today then I did in the beginning and so I continue to flirt with those complexities.
My experiences abroad are many and varied, but there are two things that were very apparent. In Mexico, I gained extensive experience teaching technical English at different international corporations. On-site teaching and simultaneous translating taught me that precise time management, imagination and resourcefulness are indispensable in all fields. After a couple of weeks, I discovered that imparting a foreign language grammar course to a group of university students or executives is equally as challenging and can grow very monotonous, very fast. So, my students became my vehicles for expression. They motivated me time and again to search for another perspective and another experience to impart the English language.
Language has always played a key role in my life. As a shy little girl, who found herself growing up in an impoverished world filled with very loud thoughts, I often imagined what life was like for a world traveller and muttered to myself all the things I would share with the citizens of the world, with all the strangers I would come to meet when I became one myself. Language helped me imagine characters and worlds better, bigger, and more colorful than my own. As an adult, teaching abroad brought those characters to life in Mexico, England, Italy, France, and Spain. Teaching provided me the opportunity to grow into an independent vibrant individual, and most importantly instilled in me a passion for not only continuous learning, but for thriving at everything I do. It is this passion which has encouraged me to continue growing both within the education sector and outside of it. Today, I am no longer a young girl who imagines a better world; through teaching, I have become part of that better world. I am shrewd, empathetic, an enamored with learning and giving back through the arts, education, and philanthropy.
I graduated, magna cum laude, with a B.A. in English from the University of Houston-Downtown.
I hold the following TEFL certification: Diploma en Enseñanza de Inglés (S.E.P. Certified) - 2009 from the International Teacher Training Organization, Guadalajara, Mexico. This is a four-week 140 hour intensive course with ten hours of observed teaching practice on groups of different abilities, including one to one teaching. To successfully complete the course, candidates were continuously assessed and required to complete and pass three research papers and a grammar test.
I have also taught TEFL and TESL in Mexico for a little over four years. I have experience teaching one on one and groups. I have taught engineers from various fields and a variety of backgrounds. My duties consisted of providing technical English group and private classes as well as revising/editing the translation of company documents. Said company documents consisted mostly of e-mails to international clients and import/export documentation. I taught several classes with children and young adults ranging from 5-14 years of age at an English language institute. I hold a B.A. in English and have 1 year and half of previous SAT reading and vocabulary tutoring under my belt. I taught two Korean sisters studying abroad in Mexico 4 days a week. Our work consisted mostly of writing, reading, and vocabulary lessons. Dominating their reading skills was important in the retention of their newly acquired vocabulary. We worked a lot on deducing and inducing, meaning to improve their reading comprehension and fluency. Several online tools as well as different textbooks were used to work on passage-based reading and sentence completion.
I taught two Korean students SAT Writing for about a year an a half. We used many online resources as well as SAT textbooks to help develop their writing skills. I assigned weekly essay assignments: short paragraphs based on specific issues. We worked on establishing a stance and building arguments in order to help develop their own points of view. Well-developed writing with supportive ideas was our main goal.
