I can help you organize the vocabulary and concepts of biology in a logical and simple framework. I studied Genetics, Developmental Biology, and Evolutionary Biology at the graduate level. With a Ph.D. in Biology, I think like a scientist and an educator automatically. You will not find a more qualified Biology tutor.

It is worth it to learn biology well because we are biology. We also depend on and affect biology in our environment. It is also good to understand biology because it has been affected by natural selection, a process that has resulted in a vast diversity of functional complexity. Evolutionary processes have applications in engineering and management. I appreciate the simultaneous order and chaos of the living world.

People learn by teaching, so I often ask my clients to explain concepts in their own words. Because biology is mostly vocabulary, this exercise gives my clients practice speaking Biology, word by word, as they learn it.

We all learn by actively engaging-- by thinking, speaking, and moving. My job as tutor is to introduce you to the many ways to play with knowledge, so that you can discover how to teach yourself.

Why do you want to learn biology? What do you want to do with it? I can help connect your ultimate motivations to the daily drive that is necessary for excellence.

Tutoring is in my bones and brings me great satisfaction. I would be honored if you’d give me the chance to talk with you about your interests and how you learn.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I enjoyed Algebra in middle school and used it during my graduate studies in Biology to understand theoretical models.

Biology

I have a B.A. in Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology from Dartmouth College. I have a Master's degree from Yale in Genetics. I have a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Houston.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored early elementary school students in reading for a semester. Also, I tutored a 6th grader in pre-algebra/algebra. I enjoy working with young people and am successful at it because of my energy and enthusiasm. I currently teach university-level Biology and have an interest in all levels and styles of education.

Geometry

I tutored Geometry at a High School full-time, as an Apollo Fellow, in Spring 2014. I also have worked with pre-AP Geometry students attending a separate High School. Geometry can be pleasantly straight-forward and has delightfully practical applications.

Very knowledgeable — Lara is extremely knowledgeable. She is able to make the lessons fun and keep my 10 year old son engaged. She is flexible in letting him explore topics that interest him, but also quick in redirecting him to topics he needs to cover for school. We really appreciate Lara's help! ...
