I am currently a first grade teacher in the Houston Independent School District. During this past year of teaching, I have fallen in love with reading instruction - demonstrating very strong classroom results in both comprehension and decoding skills. I began with a class of 25 students with only one reading at a 1st grade level, and ended the year with more than 85% of my students reading at or above 2nd grade level.
When I teach reading, I like to use hands-on activities and strategies that engage students in a variety of ways. I have also come to understand that learning to read is a very difficult hurdle for many children and something that can make them feel very self-conscious, especially if they are not excelling as rapidly as their peers. Because of this, I think it is very important to maintain an encouraging and growth-rewarding environment for children at all times.
In addition to teaching my students how to read, I also teach math, science and social studies.
