Having been a teacher in secondary and tertiary level for more than a decade, I have encountered students with different learning needs. Some need proper learning strategies, some require immediate feedback on their work, some look for positive reinforcement while some want to pass with flying colors.
No matter what their needs are, I believe every student has his/her own potential to succeed. My role as a tutor is not just to teach, but also to explore their potential and guide them along on their road to achieving their goals. Connie is an excellent tutor, very professional, patient and understanding person. My son is very happy to have Connie as a tutor. We recommend her to anyone seeking tutoring without any hesitation.
Connie does a wonderful job explaining math to my daughter who is in 4th grade. Connie is upbeat, pleasant and cheerful, I would recommend her for any tutoring needs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Chinese is my first language. I can read, write and speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.
I completed a 200-hour Putonghua course (2009-2010) in Hong Kong with an average grade of B+. I tutored a 6-year-old on Putonghua using situational approach and repetition drills.
I have been tutoring primary school kids in Hong Kong for over 10 years. The key in tutoring these kids is engaging their interests in the subject matter by prompting them by questions and guiding them to find out the answer of what they are curious about. They also need recognition and positive reinforcement.
I have been an English teacher for over 10 years. Most of my students struggle most in writing and reading. My teaching philosophy in writing and reading is to provide a step by step approach for students to acquire the skills. I like providing students with guiding questions of what to think for the writing and assistance in proofreading. They are encouraged to produce drafts of work, revise them and come up with a final product. For reading, students should be trained how to predict by contextual clues. This skill can help them with comprehending what the writer's point of view is and understand what the vocabulary means.
My first degree is on Teaching English as a Second Language in which I learned how a language is acquired and learned. I also learned how to teach the 4 skills, vocabulary and grammar in different ways to cater for the learner's level and needs. I have been teaching English to students whose mother tongue is not English for over 10 years.
I have been teaching kindergarten teachers about Phonics for 2 years in Hong Kong. These teachers had very limited knowledge about Phonics before attending the course. Through class activities like creating rhyming poems and distinguishing the soft 'c', hard 'c' and silent 'e', the teachers learned more about Phonics. Each of them came up with their own mini-lesson on teaching a letter sound at the end of the course.
