Hi!

Thanks for looking at my profile! I am 55, and I hold a BA in Communication Disorders, a Masters of Human Relations and a Masters of Science in Communication Disorders. I am a Speech-Language Pathologist and have worked with students who have special needs for seven years. I hold a valid Texas SLP license and have my Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA.

I also have tutored students for about five years, in one capacity or another, in reading, writing, grammar, K-2 math, sequencing, following directions, pragmatics and language arts. I love working with children because I enjoy making a positive impact on their lives and their future. I truly live to teach!

Please consider me when choosing a tutor for your child. I have excellent references from parents, their children and my co-workers. I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Denise K.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Many of my students present with symptoms of, or a medical diagnosis of, ADD/ADHD. I have good strategies for helping them with their school work whether medicated or not.

Aspergers

I am a speech-language therapist working with students who have mild to moderate disabilities. My caseload consists of approximately 30 students who have Autism or Aspergers. In addition to communication and pragmatic skills, I also help them with comprehension, answering questions, grammar and syntax, and understand word problems.

Autism

I am a speech-language therapist working with students who have mild to moderate disabilities. My caseload consists of approximately 30 students who have Autism or Aspergers. In addition to communication and pragmatic skills, I also help them with comprehension, answering questions, grammar and syntax, and understand word problems.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students in kindergarten through 7th grade (SLD, typical and gifted) in reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and K-2 math.

Hard Of Hearing

As a Speech-Language Therapist, I work with students who are hard of hearing. ASL is my foreign language and, while I am not fluent, I am sufficiently able to support spoken language with ASL in order to effectively communicate.

Microsoft Windows

Through tests taken at an employment agency many moons ago, and continued extensive use of the its various applications, I am considered "proficient".

Phonics

I am a speech-language pathologist and the language part includes understanding how to teach phonics. I have 7 years of experience and I have 3 years of tutoring experience.

Special Needs

For the past seven years, I have worked exclusively with students who have mild to moderate disabilities including Down Syndrome, Autism, TBI, cerebral palsy, chromosomal additions and deletions, etc., many of whom were non-verbal when I began working with them and are now fluent or close to fluent with spoken language.

Speech

AZ License #SLPL 5266
I have completed my master's and am entering my CFY year. I have 7 years of experience with PK-12th grade students.

Study Skills

Organizational skills are the first prerequisite to acquiring study skills. I've tutored for 3 years and have worked with life skills and students who have Autism for 7 years. Teaching these skills is a part of my daily encounters with these children.

Writing

My educational experiences all contained writing-intensive requirements. Two of my three degrees are considered to be part of the medical field and required an objective writing style, never in passive voice and very technical. One of my degrees is more related to the field of psychology and required a freer style of writing in which passive voice was perfectly acceptable.

I have tutored in the area of writing for four years and my students have become much more proficient in their approach to writing, regardless of their age/grade. I am confident in my ability to help others learn to write effectively. This is an area I truly enjoy teaching!
