Hi there!
I'm an experienced high school English and social studies teacher, with a background in business/start-ups, English literature, and psychology. As Malcolm Gladwell would say, I have reached my 10,000 hours, the time it takes to develop expertise.
Throughout my 9 years teaching middle and high school students, I have worked with a wide range of students from special-needs to gifted and talented. My specialties are in tutoring writing, reading, English as a foreign language, government, geography, psychology and economics. I have taught students who have been accepted to UT, Texas A&M, Dartmouth, Rice, Tufts, Stanford, Washington University, Rhodes college, Georgetown, NYU, Duke, William and Mary and many more.
My teaching philosophy varies based on the individual. No student is the same, and it takes a skilled teacher to recognize the gaps students have when learning new skills and content. I am a proponent of inquiry and project-based learning and have incorporated and successfully managed these methods in my classroom. I am also a firm believer in challenging my students but not overwhelming them.
Although there has been much debate regarding learning styles, I do believe that there are better ways to present content and introduce new skills to students who are on different academic levels. A great teacher/tutor will assess and adapt to their student's individual needs. It takes a lot of experience with many different types of students to recognize these gaps in achievement, even if one has excelled academically in school. Having worked with over 1,000 students in my teaching career, I'm able to intuitively, and with the help of data-driven assessments, recognize the differences among my students, which allows me to modify my instruction to meet their needs.
I have a passion for teaching and a love of learning. There is nothing worse than a teacher who talks down to their students. I am constantly searching for new ways to improve my craft, and I continue to develop my professional skills.
Hope to work with you soon!
