My name is Amanda and I have six years of tutoring and teaching experience that make me the ideal tutor for your needs!

I have two years of experience teaching elementary students in the Houston area. It was during these two years that I discovered I had a talent for intervention lessons with small groups of students. I thoroughly enjoyed creating activities for my students that would be engaging while improving their skills. I also have six years of tutoring experience with high school and college level students handling mostly history and writing sessions. I have acquired many great tutoring and intervention skills over the past six years to help my students improve their grade levels and skills.

I enjoy working with a small group or individual students so that I can concentrate on their needs and focus on bringing their skills to and above grade level. I have a wealth of materials at my disposal that make my tutoring sessions incredibly productive, fun, and engaging.

American History

I have a degree in History from St. Mary's University. I spent two years researching for my senior thesis while studying all aspects of history including two years of American History.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is a necessary skill for all students. It aids in writing, reading and everyday communication. I taught reading for two years at the elementary level and have a great deal of vocabulary resources at my disposal.

Grammar

I believe grammar is essential to all communication in our nation. I have a degree in English and taught grammar for two years while teaching elementary students. I have several resources to make learning and practicing grammar fun for all of my students.

European History

I have a degree in History from St. Mary's University. While I studied History I concentrated on European history, specifically Medieval Europe.

Reading

I taught reading for two years in Houston to students of all ages. I have a large personal library and a wealth of materials to aid in instruction.

Writing

Writing is a skill that I love to teach and practice. I have three years of experience teaching writing to elementary students and six years of experience teaching writing to high school and college level students. I find that students respond well to clear concise instructions followed by short exercises to practice skills. These skills, once learned and retained, are easily transferred to paper once the student has gained confidence.

Geography

I have a degree in History and part of our research involved geography. I enjoyed teaching geography to elementary students and have several maps for instructional use.

English

I have a degree in English that has greatly increased my skills in teaching the subject. I enjoy reading and sharing my skills with my students. I have many materials and books to aid with English studies.

Literature

As an avid reader, I thoroughly enjoy reading all types of literature. I have a private library at home with adult and children works. I taught reading to elementary students for two years and while obtaining my degree in English, I tutored high school and college students in Literature.

World History

World History was one of my favorite subjects in high school and my area of focus in college. I enjoyed the subject so much that I made a point to study abroad just so I could visit important historical locations throughout Europe. My love of history is contagious and I have acquired several historical books for my personal library that aid in my teaching.

Proofreading

I am a writer by nature and therefore proofreading is an essential skill to my work. While obtaining my degree in English I aided my college peers in proofreading their papers and projects.

Spelling

Spelling is instrumental in all aspects of education. I have a complete spelling curriculum that I used while teaching elementary students to aid my students and increase their spelling retention skills.

Elementary Math

I have two years of experience teaching elementary math in Houston public schools. I have a wealth of activities and materials to aid in instruction.

Elementary Science

I have two years of experience teaching elementary students in Houston. Science was one of my favorite subjects to teach because of the variety of subjects, materials and activities that highlight student engagement.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have two years of experience teaching elementary students in Houston. Currently I still tutor all elementary subjects: math, science, reading, phonics, writing, spelling, social studies, and even technology.

Phonics

I have two years of experience teaching phonics in Houston. I am also certified by Neuhaus for their Language Enrichment program which focuses on phonics and spelling.

Study Skills

As a teacher and student I have had to master various study skills including: time management, organization, intervention, tutoring and research. These skills I have successfully transferred to my students as a part of their academic curriculum. Study skills are necessary to be successful not only in the classroom, but to lay the foundation to be successful with time management in life.

ISEE

During the summer months my students would often request that I do independent sessions with them for ISEE prep. I have two years of experience teaching elementary and middle school age students in ISEE prep for schools around the Houston area. I have learned many successful test-taking strategies and skills to help my students succeed on the ISEE and gain entry into select schools.

Social Studies

I have two years of experience teaching social studies in Houston. I have taught social students at the fifth, second and kindergarten levels. My degree in History has given me a solid foundation to share my knowledge and skills with my students.
