Rice University (PhD)
I have a Ph.D. degree from Rice University with background in math and computer science. I am now an independent investment advisor. Before this, I was a financial advisor. Before that, I was an assistant professor. Even before that? I was studying at Rice University.
I love teaching. Being able to explain math in a way that most people can understand is so rewarding to me! To some people, math is hard or scary and the step-by-step reasoning seems like a magic show. It does not have to be this way! In fact, understanding the fundamental concepts and getting a clear big picture will help the students a lot. Quite many times, when I tell tutees that logarithm is just taking the exponents, they will stare at me with disbelief and shock. Then after trying some simple examples, they can actually appreciate the logarithmic operations.
As a tutor, I have found that many times, the small tips and tricks can shed light to the tutees. Then many things can turn out to be bright as if a new window has just opened. Going from the initial frustration to the enlightening “click” in their mind, the tutees become excited and the subsequent homework/test will not seem to be a daunting mountain any more.
I have two daughters, one in elementary school and one in middle school. As they grow older, I become very interested in helping them learn faster and more efficiently. I wrote a computer program "DearBank" so that they can deposit (or withdraw) their allowance money into this bank and enjoy a much higher interest rate (for example, 3 percent per month!). Inside this program, they use algebra and calculus to handle banking and also play the stock market game.
Math can be fun and easier to learn than you think, if you know how to explore that amazing world from an appropriate angle! I have a Ph.D. degree from Rice University with background in math and computer science. I am now an independent investment advisor. Before this, I was a… Read more

He knows Java well, and he provided me an excellent tutoring session in Java at an introductory level. He is patient and thorough in his explanations. He's also willing to answer any questions you have. When the time comes, I will definitely tutor with him again.
His style is simple. I'm able to apply his suggestions to many areas. I feel his expertise is valuable. Many areas were confusing, but by using his techniques of understanding, I feel more confident in my knowledge and comprehension.
Finished up for this year and Ming was outstanding. He both grasps Portfolio Theory very well and is very good at communicating it. As with any tutor, it is important to be able to supplement the instructor, so it's a win-win situation. I felt with my instructor, his TA, and Ming, I could grasp the subject and understand its content better. It takes a village sometimes to learn. Also, it can be very hard to try to prepare a question on what you don't know you don't know, in time for office hours, so a virtual one-on-one was advantageous. As courses become more theoretical to compete with "free online versions of plug and chug", it is important to have such virtual tutors, for it makes us better students and maximizes our time with our primary instructor.
Ming Z. is really patient and good at tutoring. I would recommend him to other students who need help studying statistics.
I embarked on my Series 7 studies with the knowledge that I had only one opportunity to pass this exam. Knowing my weak area was Options, I searching for a tutor with that expertise. I'm so grateful I found Ming. Not only did Ming help me conquer the options portion of the exam, but additionally, he provided tips on how to prepare for the exam overall. Ming's communication style is very crisp & clear, he was always punctual & showed great patience. I unequivocally recommend Ming as I believe he was instrumental in my passing the Series 7 exam on my first attempt!
I am happy to report that the most difficulty experienced in the process of obtaining a tutor has been my own procrastination and worry - Once I was able to make a decision and reach out to Ming for assistance - everything seemed to change. It was as if my ability or lack of when it comes to helping my daughter with the challenges she faces in Algebra II - vanished after the first communication with Ming which happened to be late one night since that was the only time in my hectic schedule that allowed me to actually stop and research these options. Ming was very accommodating, understanding, and encouraging. Enough about my relationship with Ming as a Parent - let's move on to what really matters and what I am convinced to be Ming's passion - facilitating the process of revealing math to his students.
I must preface the following by indicating that my daughter has not received any quiz grades since meeting with Ming, however there is an undeniable confidence in her ability to discuss/explain her understanding of the areas covered in the initial tutoring session. Additionally, she was encouraged by the way that Ming communicated complicated subject matter clearly. Lastly, and probably the most indicative sign that Ming has made progress - (remember prior to grading) -is that my daughter was comfortable and is now even excited about her next tutoring session.
As you can tell, I am excited also and in some sense I compare this to when my daughter needed braces because at one time she avoided smiling because of her teeth and since meeting with Ming we have been able to be happy about her ability to learn Math
Our first experience with Mr. Ming Z. has been wonderful, although my 8th grader and I have a long road to go with pre-algebra I'm feeling more confident and optimistic now that we've selected Mr. Ming as our tutor.
Ming is such an incredible tutor. He is very patient and makes everything so clear. I learned so much in the 1st week of our sessions. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was an assistant professor in the division of biostatistics at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. I performed data analysis for research and clinical studies. I have also kept providing similar services for biologists and physicians at the medical center area.
I am an investment advisor, helping people to manage their investment portfolios, with a balance between their expected return and tolerated risk. I also train people to trade in the equity market using derivatives as speculation and protection. With over 15 years of trading experience and my self-developed simulator, I can help students thoroughly appreciate the risks and money management skills. Students can get a copy of this simulator for free. Moreover, I can help students on business registration, pros and cons of different investment vehicles, and tax issues.
Computer programming is the process of translating what we human beings think to what computers understand and execute.
I have been writing computer programs for over 15 years. The languages that I have used for programming include Fortran, C, C++, Java, Mathematica, and Matlab.
Computer Science focuses on the science part for tasks involving computers (as opposed to computer engineering). On one side, computer science studies how to make computers work (e.g., operating systems and compilers). On the other hand, computer science addresses how we can use computers to solve problems (such as algorithms, data structures, programming languages).
I have a Ph.D. degree in computer science.
I hold a BS and MS degree in mathematics from University of Science & Technology of China, one of the top universities and top math departments. Differential equations were part of the core curriculum. If you need further information, please let me know.

I can proudly help you on the math in finance. Particularly I can help people prepare for the Series 3 and Series 7 exams.
I teach people about the investment concepts: stocks, bonds, open or close funds, and derivatives.
Also I have developed a FREE computer program to train people on stock trading with real data.
Finite math is a quite broad collection of topics that are anything but calculus. I will help you with mathematical model building, linear algebra, linear programming, combinatorics, probability, statistics and logic. I have over 15 years of experience working with educational and research projects in the field.
I had heavily used linear algebra in my studies and research for over ten years. From the algebraic viewpoint, linear algebra is the "art" of manipulating matrices. From the geometric viewpoint, it is the study of vector spaces. One trick in linear algebra is to "dig holes". If you have not heard about it before, this idea will definitely help your understanding of linear algebra.
I had rigorous and formal training in mathematical analysis. I also had extensive exposure to logic in computer science study and research. During my previous logic tutoring sessions, I had covered the topics of set theory, propositional and first-order logic, completeness, and other logical issues.
I held a Series 7 license when I worked as a financial advisor. Many people find the Series 7 exam hard because of the options problems. I have developed my own trading algorithms based on options (calculation and valuation). The math behind the options can be explained and learned in a relatively easier way.
