Good writing tells the basics: who, what, when, where, how and why, each with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. A good writer can get you to the beach but a great writer will make you shake the sand off your shoes, wish you'd brought sunscreen, and suddenly develop an innate love of driftwood you never knew you had. I can help you become a good writer. Good enough to write a solid, informative and slightly out of the box college admission essay, term paper or cover letter for a job application. A great one? That's pretty much up to you, but I can help edit you to near greatness. You write it, I edit it, and together we can create something memorable and polished -- in your voice. Something to help make your case before showing your face.

A quick bit of background: I hold a BA in English from Southern Methodist University. Over the years, working as a copywriter for advertising agencies and as a freelance writer for every thing from an HISD board report to a brochure for a fly-killer, I have been paid to write. I am a writer but I also offer editing skills, which in your case will be probably more of what you need. Case in point: I recently read a sentence written by a pretty bright business exec. In full corpspeak mode, he said "I expect you to be in maximum throughput form..." In real world words, he meant "I expect you to get the job done quickly.' That's what I do -- I help you learn to speak to others in language they understand.

Important note: I work most effectively with an older clientele -- high school seniors, college students, business executives and professionals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

One of my first jobs was as a proofreader for a large, international advertising agency. Among our accounts were a major bank, a natural gas company, many local corporations issuing annual reports and an oil company that put a tiger in your tank. If a word were misspelled or a number transposed, it was more than just an 'oops' moment, it was an expensive fix. I can help you learn to focus to avoid mistakes that can cost you.
