Since I was a child, I loved to play school and I always wanted to be the teacher. However, my friends objected to playing this game because I did not allow anyone else to take the lead in "my classroom". Later, when I became an adult, it was very clear to me that the only profession where I could be happy would be the teaching profession. I started to major in science, but my roommate was majoring in foreign languages, and wanted a partner with whom she could study. After taking beginning French and German, I agreed with her that it would be a perfect fit for me.
Consequently, I majored in Romance languages and minored in English, and I easily secured teaching positions in the United States and the Middle East. While I lived in the Middle East, I prepared students to take the TOEFL exam in order to attend universities in the United States. The word got around in the camp in Saudi Arabia that my students were passing the exam, and I became very popular as a tutor. I enjoyed working with students one-on-one so much, that I decided that whenever I went back to the United States, I would like to continue to work in a similar manner.
In 1993, I returned to Houston, and applied with a program with the Houston Independent School District which consisted of teaching students in homebound, drug rehab agencies and hospitals. Working at MD Anderson was an incredible experience. Both teacher and student learned to march on with life regardless of the circumstances which surrounded us. We marched in faith, not in fear. In the drug rehab agencies, I learned to be more compassionate with students who had chosen the wrong path but were willing to work out their shortcomings in order to live a better life. In the homebound setting, I learned to cope with unpleasant environments as well as incredibly privileged environments where students were blessed with wealth. Regardless of the circumstances, I learned to love and enjoy teaching the different subjects for over fifteen years.
I was the Foreign Language Specialist for a program called Community Services for over fifteen years, and I retired from the public school system in 2004. Soon thereafter, I accepted a part-time position to teach French at a private Christian school. Now that I am retired, I volunteer to teach English and Citizenship to international students from all over the world. I have to stay connected with students who are eager to learn.
I believe that I can still inspire students to develop a love for learning and master their skills. Although I have taught most of my life in the foreign languages, I am capable of teaching other subjects in the humanities. You show me a book, chapter and page which a student needs to learn, and I will teach this student how to master this information.
I am qualified to tutor this subject because my undergraduate studies were in English. Furthermore, I have tutored students to prepare for testing in different levels. Students often tell me that it was a fun experience.
I attended a Christian University and took Old Testament and New Testament. Furthermore, I attend Sunday School and keep learning about the Bible, and I am often asked to teach a class. My son is a Bible chairman at a Christian School, and he encourages me to keep on learning and teaching this subject.
I teach citizenship to many internationals and teach Sunday School in church. I believe in the power of persuasion, and expressing oneself in public is very important. I have conquered the fear of being the focus of attention and keeping the interest of the listeners.
