Hi there! My name is Katie, and I can't wait to help you get into college. If you are freaking out about your upcoming gauntlet of standardized tests, if the thought of yet another soulless scantron sheet makes you nauseous, and if you are losing sleep over whether or not you should have chosen "C" for the fifth time in a row...relax. It's all going to be okay, and I am here to help.
I've been a professional test prep tutor for five years. I've taught hundreds of students and logged over 1000 hours with a major test prep company. But I was tired of my company and others like it taking advantage of hard-working families by charging them hundreds of dollars *per hour* for instructors who got paid peanuts and received limited professional support. My bottom line is not about money -- it's about helping you become the best student you can be.
I've worked with National Merit Scholars, National Hispanic Merit Scholars, valedictorians, ESL students, students with ADHD and dyslexia, and those with just good old-fashioned test anxiety. In Houston, I've tutored students at both public and private high schools, including Strake Jesuit, St. John's, Lutheran North, Westside, HSPVA, and The British School. I've seen amazing achievements with my tutoring students, including SAT score increases of 550 points and ACT score increases of 8 points. Plus, I'm way fun. Tests are boring, but working with me, you'll never be bored.
I studied English and Political Science as an undergraduate at University of San Diego and English as a graduate student at Rice University, making me well qualified to tutor English, reading, writing, AP Literature, AP Language, AP Government, and AP US History. If you think I might be a good match for you, I'm certainly willing to consider other subjects. Just ask me!
Important note: If you are located more than 15-20 miles outside of my zip code (77006), I will only be available for Skype tutoring. I love Skype tutoring, and I know how to keep it engaging and fun, but I understand this is not what all families want. Please feel free to write me should you like to know more about how Skype tutoring can help you. Hi there! My name is Katie, and I can't wait to help you get into college. Katie has been tutoring our sophomore Evan for about 7 months, helping him with his organization issues, studying and test-taking techniques, and preparation for the SAT test. Katie has really motivated Evan to work hard in school, which is something my husband and I haven't had much success at in the past.
Evan was just invited to his first "Bravo Breakfast" at Stratford for making good grades, and we know that Katie's tutoring is a huge part of his success! Thanks, Katie!!
Helping a pre-teen polish his grammar skills in the middle of a lazy summer felt like a daunting task. I'm not an educator, but I did feel that capitalization and punctuation were something I should be able to teach my own child. However, internet searches for lessons and grammar rules left me feeling overwhelmed, and unsure where to start.
I am absolutely confident that asking Katie for help was the right choice. Before the first lesson, I was especially impressed with her thorough pre-session testing and clear communication about how to prepare for a Skype session. She knew EXACTLY where to start. When the lesson began, she immediately established a solid rapport with my son. She was able to help him more in 90 minutes than I would have thought was possible, and he finished up his session with an excitement and confidence that thrilled me. Her post-session recap was thorough and informative, and I appreciated her on-point analysis of the issues.
We won't hesitate to schedule more sessions with Katie, and recruit her for help whenever it is needed.
Katie has worked with our son all year and did an excellent job! Our son did great on the ACT, but most importantly, Katie has made reading and writing to be thoroughly enjoyable! Our son has 2 hour sessions with Katie and at the end of each session, he is so happy. Katie has a way of transforming a challenging book into an exciting journey.
We have had about 4 lessons now with Katie and I have seen a change in my sons attitude towards the English subject. His words exactly "Katie made writing fun." He recently took the STARR Writing test for 7th grade with less anxiety and a clear idea of how to effectively use his time.
Katie provides very thorough lesson reviews which has helped me work with his school councilors to modify his 504 accommodations.
I highly recommend Katie for any one struggling with English.
Katie is so much more than a tutor! We are so fortunate to have her in our lives. She is teaching our daughter how to think about literature, I know she will benefit from this experience for a lifetime.
Katie is an excellent tutor, very professional, patient and understanding person. My son is very happy to have Katie as a tutor. We recommend her to anyone seeking tutoring without any hesitation.
Great experience, definitely would recommend to others and would use her again. Very nice attitude and willingness to answer any questions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
