Kerri’s qualifications in specific subjects below.
I was a Dyslexia/Reading Intervention Specialist in the Pasadena ISD in Pasadena TX for six years. I received my dyslexia training through PISD along with some classes offered through Neuhaus in Houston and a workshop offered through Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas TX.
My training included assessing for dyslexia as well as dyslexic tendencies and characteristics, and then working with the students to help them compensate/overcome their reading difficulties.
I am certified in the state of Texas to teach grades 1 - 8. I have taught 3rd, 5th, and 6-8th grade reading improvement.
I have a certification in Elementary Ed, and taught remedial math for several years, as well as third, fifth grade math.
I hold a State of Texas Certification in ESL, and have worked with many Limited English Proficient students in the Pasadena ISD, helping them to improve their reading and writing skills.
I worked for Sylvan Education Solutions (Sylvan in Schools) for 7 1/2 years, where I was trained in the teaching of phonics. I use several methods with the students including oral, computer and written lessons.
I have taught 6th through 8th grade reading improvement and was a Dyslexia/Reading Intervention Specialist in the Pasadena ISD. In addition I was a reading instructor for Sylvan Education Solutions where I worked with students to improve their reading skills. In total I have 14 years experience in teaching remedial reading, and 6 years experience working with dyslexic students.
I have taught spelling for a number of years to children with dyslexia, as well as third and fifth graders. I have used a multi-sensory approach as well as the traditional approach. I am currently taking a class in Scientific Spelling to further help students with spelling difficulties.
I have taught vocabulary for a number of years to both on grade level and below grade level students. Vocabulary instruction is both beneficial in reading and writing. The larger vocabulary a person has, the better his/her reading and writing ability.
While employed in Pasadena ISD as a Dyslexia teacher, I spent time working with the students on their writing skills as well as their reading skills. Also, having taught 3rd and 5th grades, we worked on writing skills so the students would be prepared for the more intensive writing they would be doing on their state writing tests in higher grades. Writing, as all other subjects builds upon itself, with the student making progress from year to year.
